A bit too far to drive on a Wednesday night for us working folks (unless your job is an ex CEO, 80's music icon re-connecting with his past and future). It would be quite easy for Thomas to make his music sound like it did on the albums - he could just hit "Play" on his Mac's CD player for that. But it's not karaoke we want. His new version of Leipzig totally renewed my interest in the song. It's amazing how fresh they all sound now. I also totally connected to the lyric "Thirty nine and you need some leeway". Seriously, James was really taken with the slight, yet significant changes to the opening chords in "Flying North." And, honestly (and people will grow tired of me saying this), the beautiful piano lines replacing the guitar work toward the end of "Budapest" just resonates with me. Now, if Thomas would like to make that gorgeous line available as a ringtone, please, I'll use that as my Batphone ring for my bestest friends. :-) >>His new version of Leipzig totally renewed my interest in the song. Pretty amazing to be that tuned in, no? I admire (and, to a certain respectful degree, envy) truly creative people who have such a splendid grip on things at such an early age. I mean - damn - I could barely express myself in my early 20s, and, man - some of these songs in their earliest incarnations - could he have still been a teenager when he wrote them? That says a lot. Really, this tour has just solidified every good thought I've had about Our Fearless Leader - a really decent soul who's awfully damn talented. Autumn tour, new music - I don't care where he goes or what kind of loan I'll have to take out to get there, I'll be there for at least one stop! :-) Forty, and I certainly could still use some more leeway, (Jeez, Thomas put out a live CD when he was the age I am now. (New tour date announced) Melissa, you're right. It's amazing that someone so young could express himself to such a degree. I'm with you -- at that age, I had a hard time behaving correctly, much less could I leave great art for the ages. Look at that track listing, it's incredible! "Dinner's in the microwave, sweetie" -- in 1980?? 1981?? On Sat, 13 May 2006, Melissa Jordan wrote: > Keith, I completely agree. Genographic is a research project that National Geographic is doing to basically trace humanity's migratory journey back to a common ancestor on this big, flat earth. ;-) There's a tremendous multinational team of geneticists and anthropologists at work on the project, which is being overseen by one of our Explorers-in-Residence, Dr. Spencer Wells (who spends most of his time in Africa and Asia, and is usually a massively sunburnt, but awfully handsome presence when you do catch a glimpse of him in the hallway! It's that whole rock star/scientist swoon thing...) The cool thing is that anyone can participate in the project, with an anonymous DNA swab kit (you get a number with your kit - then you can look up your results online with your number after your DNA history is analyzed.) I've seen the amazing results for some of my colleagues, charting how their ancestors traversed the planet. I'm going to do it soon. Apparently, Yo-Yo Ma is utterly taken with the project and keeps buying kits for his friends so that they can see where their ancient roots are. The kit is usually $100, but as a Geographic employee, I can order kits at a discount for $75. So, if any of the Alloy'ed ever decides they'd like to participate - let me know, and I can order you a kit. (Science on a budget!!) It's on my mind right now, as I'm writing bits and pieces for our annual report tonight (while listening to AAMB), and I get to do the write up on Genographic (along with giant catfish, Bactrian gold, and the Dmanisi fossils.) Man, I love this job. It just blows me away what astounding things science and technology can offer us. Just having one of those warm, fuzzy, gee-whiz, what a world moments. My mom would have so dug the Genographic Project. I wish she was here to see the neat stuff I get to work with now. :-) Cheers - and Happy Mother's Day to the moms among our number - yeah, I'm a couple of hours early, but, hey!
