I read his blog and most livejournals using the rss feeds. It feels civilised, and mildly geeky. I don't like the idea of adding "celebs" to my livejournal friends list. It'll end up being like MySpace. Which would be VERY VERY BAD. - -- Peter ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 12:03:57 -0400 From: "Thurlow, Robin" Subject: RE: Alloy: LiveJournal blog feed MySpace is just another social network.. it's more quick and casual than LiveJournal, collecting pictures of people you know or just like (as in the case of celebrities), and networking. I see it as a way to quickly notify one's fanbase of upcoming events. I think it can be a great thing for artists. Some people use it for sleazy reasons (there's an icky "browse" feature where you can search for people in particular age groups etc.. which can be dangerous) But for the most part I feel it's harmless fun. You can control how much personal information is actually shown on the profile, so your safety level is up to you. I've actually heard a lot of great music this past week by flipping through the "music" section & listening to bands I've never heard of. LiveJournal is still my preferred blog forum. I like the layout, & the people I've become email-pals with there have been very nice. Most of the people I'm linked to in MySpace are either friends in real life, or the same email-pals from LiveJournal. xx ~r ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 10:32:05 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: RE: Alloy: LiveJournal blog feed Another option to keep on top of the blog is to use the Google start page. I was able to add Thomas' (and Melissa's) RSS feeds as content blocks on my stat page along with my local weather and news feeds. I was just looking at the add content page on there and it appears there may be a problem with it, but I was able to add them before. I have a page on MySpace due to some bands I like being on there. It in itself is not an evil thing, but as Robin said, some people use it in bad ways. It has also received a lot of bad press lately as local stations ran a lot of news stories about it during sweeps week. You got to love the old "something in your fridge can kill you - news at 10!" sweeps week type stories. - -Keith - -----Original Message----- From: owner-alloy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-alloy@smoe.org] On Behalf Of Thurlow, Robin Sent: Friday, April 07, 2006 10:04 AM To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: RE: Alloy: LiveJournal blog feed MySpace is just another social network.. it's more quick and casual than LiveJournal, collecting pictures of people you know or just like (as in the case of celebrities), and networking. Loved that recent response to TMDR's Shed Life blog post. (see http://blog.thomasdolby.com/?p=16#comment-116) There always has to be someone with an agenda of some kind. I bet he posts that on a lot of artists blogs that he's a "fan" of as well as to spam anyone else that he thinks might listen. Notice how the "identity" of the poster is the campaigns website. How is that person not on a crusade? Does that belong on a musical artists weblog about his recoding techniques? That's hijacking someone elses airtime to sell your own product. What say Tom will eventually start doing a lot more quality control on his blog responses, or removing the ability to comment altogether? I felt the need to reply as these people bother me but I didn't want to swamp Dolby's blog in crass flames (though that'll happen eventually, it happens to us all and is a fact of the internet. Dolby is new to blogging. He's yet to see the true horror. I wonder if he checks his MySpace regularly?). Remembering from experience that some people here can be a little excitable and others might just see it as mostly off-topic and since we were just talking about livejournal, I decided that I would post it there: http://praest76.livejournal.com/54883.html In the meantime here is a link to some vomit/tear inducing photos of a kitten and a monkey who love each other: http://mfrost.typepad.com/cute_overload/2006/04/best_friend_ren.html - -- Peter ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Apr 2006 14:24:41 -0700 (PDT) From: Melissa Jordan Subject: Re: Alloy: Won't somebody *please* think of the children?!?!
