Now that you mention it, Keith, that's exactly right. It has that kind of drab, pastel flavor. If I may speculate, it seems to me that any new material we get from our Dolby in the not-so-distant future may exhibit some of the style and feel of his earliest work. He has chosen a visual style that recalls the "mad scientist" motif from the early eighties, and he's also clearly embraced his original format-- the one-man band. Many artists arrive at a moment at which they feel compelled to return to the incipient fertile ground from which their initial successes sprung. For me, I would faint dead away at the prospect of The Golden Age of Wireless II (obviously titled in a more clever fashion than that!) Nobody wants Thomas to just remake his first album, but new material that recalls old material, produced with contemporary technology and methodology would really hit the spot with me. The Golden Age of Mobile (totally wireless) - just kidding. I love the fact that his look for this tour refers to his earliest work. It reflects everything that initially drew me in, and that seems to match with his comments on the MadPod interview: he is looking to reconnect with fans and the past. I think that's a very necessary connection before moving forward. I have this mix tape in my car (yes, my crapheap car only has a tape player - and thanks, Ford, for making it impossible to exchange for a cd player) that runs "Europa" right into "Eastern Bloc." We go from having pictures and seeing films and pushing past the paperman to satellite TV and CNN... reconnect to the past to move forward... Half-assed philosophy on a caffeine-free morning. One more thing I noticed on this topic. I watched the video for SBMWS the other night and noticed the overcoat that TMDR was wearing just as he walks into the hospital is very similar to the one worn in the HOB shows in Jan. At first I thought it was the same, but the one in the video is a bit simpler. I wouldn't mind seeing a new album with some of the characteristics of the early work. If the re-tooling of his old material for the live shows is any indication of what is to come from new material, I'm all for it. He's revisited material in the past with Eastern Bloc. We arrived at the Mighty around 9:50pm. There were about 20 people in line ahead of us. I'm 36. I noted that everyone in line looked to be around my age or older. "It's geriatric night at the Mighty!" And everyone was cold. (In fact, it snowed at the higher elevations in S.F.) They let us in shortly after 10. The Mighty is pretty good sized inside. But it has two speaker stacks that would be more at home in a stadium. They delivered a full-body internal organ massage for the rest of the evening. Let's hear it (ha!) for Etymotic ear plugs... The house DJ was spinning various tunes. Not much that I recognized, until he put on a pretty good mix of 'Legs' by the Art of Noise. Dolby's gear was already set up, with the oscilloscope on the left. The Mighty has a large projection screen above the stage, but I wasn't too impressed with their lightsynth - I've seen better effects from my Atari Jaguar VLM. But Dolby had another plan for their screen... Dolby came out a bit after 11. The house DJ introduced him by saying "I think I remember listening to this guy in third grade - which might make some of you feel a bit old..." This earned him a round of boos. And then it was time. Dolby opened up with Leipzig, a pleasant surprise. He'd changed the synth line to a very metallic patch, which was an interesting variation. He'd also added a head-mounted camera to his impressive headphone rig, and was projecting what he was looking at on the screen above. Neat! My brain is like a sieve, so I'm trying to remember what tracks he played. Flying North, I Live in a Suitcase, Science, and Europa were all in there. For the encore he did Hyperactive and a great version of Airhead that he assembled one part at a time. If anyone got a bootleg of that, I'd love a copy... He mentioned during the concert that he thought he was getting his mojo back. I'm hoping this tour inspires him to record new material! We left at the end of his set (a day exploring Fry's and Halted had done in our legs), so I don't know if he came back out with Bochum Welt or not. It was a blast to finally see him play live, and everyone seemed to be having a good time. He looked to be having fun too, "playing with his toys". If you can get to one of the shows - go! - -- I think my life is fuller because I realize that I don't know what I'm doing. I see it *now*... :^) Excellent photography, I must say! And hey--his nose looks new and improved. I gotta say, the man is looking and sounding foxy. He's ready for the world, baby! ;^) Oh yeah, and I was mostly ignoring "The O.C." on tv earlier, as I was working on my quilt, but there was this cover band on there, a Foreigner cover band I assume, and suddenly familiar notes caught my attention. The band was playing a cover of "Waiting for a Girl Like You"...but of course their keyboard player just didn't have those magical Thomas Dolby fingers. ;^) Same notes in the same sequence, yes, but it just *lacked* something.
