Now I feel better because Stephen, Monya, and I were under the impression we'd be treated to a full set. Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed the show because Thomas seemed more confident and his voice was in fine form. And it was probably wishful thinking on my part, but I do believe that TMDR actually smiled at me during "Europa," appropriately enough! Of course, the beautiful Monya was standing next to me, and we all know how he feels about HER ;-), so the grin might well have been directed to my right. But indulge me in my little fantasy...Anyway, it was more or less the same show as the one at the Red Devil Lounge, albeit with different clothing (brown henley shirt, brown pants and shoes) and the added visual treat of a head cam attached to the now famous headphones so we saw Thomas's hands and keyboards projected on a screen behind him superimposed with some abstract, techno-style video. He did "Airhead" as a second song at the encore and this time he did seem to literally be building it on the fly. It started with some vocalese type of samples with some heavy breathing thrown in and it wasn't until he played the bassline that I had any idea what tune it was going to be. Quite a few folks were singing along which was very gratifying. There were a lot of hardcore fans there because requests such as "Therapy/Growth", "The Wreck of the Fairchild", and "Urban Tribal" were bandied about. Apparently, TMDR must have talked to some attendees beforehand because he dedicated "I Live in a Suitcase" to people who had traveled from multiple cities he named including "his hometown, Half Moon Bay". The headliner of the evening was an Italian friend of his who had invited him to do this gig and Thomas dedicated "Flying North" to him. I was amused at the Marc Almond look-alike DJ who introduced Thomas who said he remembered all the way back to THIRD grade when TMDR was popular. As if I didn't feel old enough! And I enjoyed TMDR's comment prior to "Europa" about feeling like Austin Powers waking up and finding all these shiny toys to play with! After the song some guy yelled out, "You go, Austin Powers!" When Thomas started making his thank yous during "Science," my heart fell because I really knew the show was almost over. But I agreed with Stephen when he said that "Airhead" was worth the price of admission alone. So again we're left with appetites whetted for an entire show - I never thought I'd look forward to Tax Day! Lunesse has just noted a new gig for San Francisco! This means that the Bay Area peeps will get to hear the full set, as opposed to the truncated set that was performed at Mighty on Thursday. Yeah, that was a cool trick! The fun you can have with a LCD projector and digital video these days. Thomas' music is very visual and sensual...and the possibilities for this are endless. It would be cool to add backup singers to the video...maybe they flash on screen when the vocoder is activated. For those of you who haven't seen them yet, someone has posted some jpegs and videos of the mighty 119 show here: http://www.antisoshal.com/dolby.htm He's pioneering again, isn't he? A one man orchestra and a one man visual extravaganza, with just a van load of gear. (Okay, the invaluable roadie probably helped.) Maybe this means Thomas can afford to do lots of breathtaking shows all over the place, without, as he wrote once, "ending up in the hole." You go Austin Powers! Yeah baby....YEAH!
