Hello Alloy! Yup, like Slarv, I came in around the start, and although I'm a little fuzzy about Paul's mail, I remember many happy hours (no pun intended!) spent in the Tap Room, with the Emeritus stories and Bunfu dogs galore! I miss that wonderful landscape that Tom Kidding did, with the way into the tap room via the pyramid, (anyone else remember that?) All the early beatnik stuff was marvellous too - remember the sonic harp thing, and the moodmaker? Very cool! Whilst Beatnik has become an incredible company, I miss that early fun of the showcases on the headscape site as well - and dang - I never did get my Headscape baseball cap! I joined Alloy in 1996 when I was working for Nokia in Finland - I remember checking the Tap room and then Alloy from our office over the mobile phone factory floor! I think this is one of the earliest mails I sent - the biography thing: http://www.smoe.org/lists/alloy/v01/v01.n018 Funny to think that three countries later I'm still lurking and checking my Alloy mails and still dreaming of doing backing vocals for Mr. Dolby as much as I did then! And now the man is back playing live - just have to figure out how the hell to get to one of his gigs! Thanks for the reply. I really like that track, and couldn't figure out if Tellu was a person or group name. I had no idea about joikking, either. I suppose it's similar to what we know of as yodeling from Switzerland? The music is *really* cool. When it was described to me as folk music, I thought, dang, this is "folk?" Here in the U.S., folk is usually quieter than other forms of music, not raucous and sprightly like these ladies. :) And she's singing about the wind, that's pretty righteous. Love it! Thanks for the info. It's pretty handy, knowing someone in Finland to ask about this. (What a great site that is!) Colin Hay is a lot of fun live! I tried to get tickets to hear him Saturday night in L.A. at Largo, but it was sold out (other than standing room by the bar, and there was NO WAY I was doing that after HOB.) Not only Hay's music really enjoyable, his banter between songs is pretty funny. I saw him play on Valentine's Day in Chicago at a GREAT venue called the Old Town School of Folk. (TMDR, if you do the Midwest, you should consider that as a stop for you.) My cab was way late picking me up, and I ended up running into him outside the hall and got to talk to him for a bit. Nice guy. - Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com Elaine wrote: I've been poring over TOS looking for advance word of club dates. I am a big fan, even though I have no idea what they're singing about. They're regularly featured on BBC Radio 3's 'Late Junction,' which is where I first heard them. There's a lot of great music from Finland (and other Scandinavian countries) out there that doesn't get primetime radio play and LateJunction is a good place to hear it. Another wonderful band to check out is JPP. As far as I'm aware they're an 'intstrumental only' band, but the stuff they out out is phenominal.
