And why do I > like this Tuulet song > so much, and what the heck are they saying in > Finnish? :-) > Tellu is pretty well known in Finland as an ex-member of 'Hedningarna' a famous Swedish/Finnish group of girl folk singers with contemporary sound that has seen their music high in the Scandinavian charts as well as at folk festivals all over the world. Folk music is regarded as fairly trendy in Finland, with lots of contemporary groups bringing the sounds up to date, and for various reasons (I won't bore you with cultural history stuff!) it has a bigger, younger and more serious following than in most other European countries (hence the existence of the folk music university in Kaustinen in Finland, and the Kaustinen International Folk Music Festival, where I've had a lot of fun performing as a 'Journeyman' in the past!) Telle often uses 'joikking' - a powerful style of a traditional singing originating amongst the Lapps if I remember rightly, (the 'yelle eh leh-leh' part of the clip you linked to me is joikking.) The lyrics of the song 'Tuulet' begin 'Where the winds (are), there (is) safety', mentions forests and bears - - it's basically a song about how the powers of nature come to give help and protection to a girl travelling through the forest - all very appropriate for this witches of the north album! BTW if you like this music, you might also like Vdrttind (and Hedningarna)! You can listen to more of Varttina and Tellu (group name Suden Aika) on this site: http://www.musex.fi/midem2006/index.html?artist It even includes the full version of the 'Tuulet' song! Enjoy! Hi All, Since we've made it past 10 years, I'm wondering how many of us are original members? It was so long ago I can't recall how it came down but I think Alloy was actually created sometime after we met on an earlier list (The Flat Earth?). I've totally forgotten all that, but I do recall I was there at the beginning when Alloy was formed. Oh, and I don't intend this to be an original member vs. newer, so I'm also interested in how long some of you have been posting and lurking in this list, even if not an original member. And, happy birthday, Alloy. 10 years? So weird. I've been away for the last four years, so it seems even longer to me... Without Alloy, I would not have met some of my dearest friends. It was a very fortunate thing to have been directed here so long ago. :-) This is neither here nor there, but back in the day - before blogs - I wrote travel stories and sent them to Alloy. Now, I'm finally working on a book, and some of those stories will likely be in it. I would never have written those stories without having this community to "hear" them. Who do you think would be a good supporting artist to open for Thomas when he is headlining? He didn't say any names and said that the tour managers usually put things like that together. But if you were the one to choose, who would it be? Would it be a new up and coming act with similar musical styles, or a contemporary of Thomas' that will appeal to Dolby fans as well as bring their own? My thought at first is that it would be cool if he had an up and coming group, but then I thought that might alienate fans of the new group or Thomas. So, my thought of someone that I think would complement Thomas in concert would be Robyn Hitchcock solo. He does not require a lot of setup - just Robin and his acoustic guitar. I saw him at the Lion's Lair last year and he is quite entertaining. He could even join Thomas onstage to reprise the roll of Keith in White City. My second choice would probably be Howard Jones. For those interested in ancient net history, I'll re-post it here: Subject: Alloy: Incarnation 2. From: Paul Baily Date: Mon, 26 Feb 96 22:36:00 +1000 If you have no interest in an open dolby mailing list, my apologies for taking up your time with unsolicited mail, please let me know and I'll take you off my list. ** Please Note: This is just one humble Thomas Dolby fan's attempt to keep an open (interactive) version of our mail list running. I have no affiliation with kaleidospace, FES, Netrex or TMDR ...wish I did, but there y'go, can't win 'em all. :-) ** [If you've already received a message from me a while back with the subject "propose interim dolby list:alloy." my apologies for yet another long message; I figured it was best to send the full story to everyone; it's been a while...] Okay, enough apologies and disclaimers, on with the message. If you're a member of FES but weren't subscribed to the dolby-list at kspace.com, you may be wondering what I'm going on about. The dolby-list was an open mailing list, i.e. every member could post as well as receive messages. It was a place where a lot of us chatted about all things Dolby, enjoying each other's company, offering different interpretations of tracks we thought we knew so well... and occasionally being honoured by guest appearances by TMDR himself. Around the end of 1995, kspace handed over the reins of the dolby-list to the good people at FES. You have your own list here so our addresses were simply added to the list. Unfortunately, what was lost in the process was the open aspect of the dolby-list. flatearth-l is currently a read-only list intended for the distribution of newsletters and newsflashes. As an interim solution, a few of us used the tap room page in the excellent FES web site the problem was that for those of us separated by the tyranny of distance (slow connections, slow modems, etc.), email-only access to internet, or time restrictions, it proved difficult or simply impossible to participate in discussions going on there. Tom Kidding , secretary of FES, on Saturday advised me that FES will be making flatearth-l an open list in the near future, but that it may take a few weeks to start implementing the change. (Great news!) So, in order to help maintain the momentum and to take some time pressure off of FES, Netrex, I'd like to (again :-) offer you Alloy: _________________________________________ To avoid any misunderstandings, let me make this very clear: Alloy is NOT in any way intended undermine or subvert the tremendous efforts of FES, Netrex, or flatearth-l. On the contrary: it's intended to complement their work and will be decommissioned the moment flatearth-l becomes an open list. _________________________________________ INTRODUCING...: Alloy is a pseudo mailing list that is intended to get us all talking again, and provide the services of an open list that many of us may have missed since moving from kspace. It's a pseudo-list because it's not run by a listserver at all, it's just myself, my computer, and a very long address list ...not to mention a (hopefully) patient ISP. ;-) WHAT DOES THE ALLOY LIST REQUIRE FROM YOU? Nothing more than with a normal mail-list: if you want to sit back and read, you're welcome to do so. If you want to comment on, say, what you think the real meaning of Hyperactive!, just exactly who you think Caroline 452 or Europa is, or maybe mull over questions from the Tommy awards, please type away! HOW TO POST: If you want to post a message to the Alloy-list, email it to me with the subject having the prefix "Alloy:" and at least once a day I'll have my machine check and forward any Alloy-list messages on to everyone else. If you want to reply to a message, please send your message to me at the above address (reply to sender only) NOT reply-to-all. Due to emailer addressing constraints your message will only have about a third of the addresses on the list. If you send it to me I'll make sure all the other subscribers see it. Sorry, it won't quite be as immediate as a real list as I don't have a permanent connection to internet. HOW TO [UN]SUBSCRIBE: If you want to be removed from the list, let me know. If you want to add a friend, just give me their email address and I'll act accordingly. When the official open list is launched I'll forward my address list to the administrator so [s]he can add or delete you as applicable. WHO DOES ALLOY REACH? The flatearth-l subscribers number approx 880, these addresses look to be compiled from responses of the web site's member signup page. Rather than a) offending FES by using it's list without permission, b) offending possibly hundreds of users with unsolicited email, and c) having to slot in work commitments, oh, and eating and sleeping [ :-) ] I've chosen to use the original kspace subscriber list which numbers around 120 and will be asking FES to add Alloy subscribe instructions in their next newsflash or newsletter. That way I can be reasonably sure that the list is reaching only those people who actually want it. WHY DO ALLOY? I live in Brisbane, Australia so don't get the chance to go bowling on a Friday morning in New Orleans that often, but I sure as hell like reading messages from those of you who do! I also know that a few of you have email-only access to internet which means you can't get to the tap room. I used to have that kind of access so know how frustrating that can be. Here's my attempt to close that gap. GOT A COMMENT/GRIPE? I'm all ears! If you want the list to see it prefix it with Alloy:, if you want it to me only, drop the prefix. Please bear in mind, though, that I'll be doing this list manually so things may not happen quite as fast as on a majordomo server, but I'll do my best. (read: be gentle. :-) I should once more make this clear, this isn't intended to undermine or subvert the official list, but merely act as an interim solution to at least keep in touch with you until the real list becomes open. stay well, and let's stay in touch! I think the Birchmere tix actually go on sale on the 7th. Ram's Head isn't coming up yet. For anyone near DC - the Birchmere is marvelous. From their website: "The Birchmere is a Music Hall, which differs from a regular nightclub in that we are completely seated (except Band Stand, see below), i.e. no standing room or dancing. Also known as a Listening Room, The Birchmere is geared towards artists & fans who prefer a seated, attentive audience, ready to listen to The Music!" Ahhh, yes. Ready to listen to The Music. I go to this place fairly often, and I've had a great time each and every time. Good choice, TMDR!!! :-) Ram's Head in Annapolis is smaller and is also a seated venue. Actually, all the East Coast locations are seated. Sellersville Theater in PA is run by the peeps who used to run my favorite Philly music venue, The Point. And Joe's Pub in NYC is exceptional. This will be terrific! Cheers, Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com Elaine wrote: Tickets on sale now! http://www.birchmere.com/calendar/calendar_list.cfm $22.50 What about that other Annapolis place?
