I just eat, sleep, drink, live, and breath professional audio and music, I write product reviews and features for 4 audio magazines, and I also educate budding young engineers, so it's just second nature to me to be on top of the technology. It's the art/science nature of Mr. Dolby's music that originally pointed me toward this career path to begin with. Crackers, the show was indescribably fun. You simply must go, however you can, wherever it ends up being. Isn't it funny how much of our discussion centers on geography...you for proximity, me for questions, others for travel, all for the flat old Earth. More details of his performances have come to my mind that I wanted to share. It was an overwhelming weekend. I remember being surprised that the female line "blinded me with science" (the one, for example, after "I can smell the chemicals") was a two-part sample. It makes perfect sense now, but I never thought about it being anything but a one-part line. He hit the console once for "blinded me with" and again for "science" (and again for "science" one more time). Another thing. He sang Hyperactive of course, and the vocal he gave was a harmony with what you'd think of as the chorus melody. I loved that. That's a trick I really like in a lot of Fagen/Steely Dan songs too, where the background singer takes center stage. Know what I mean? Thomas programmed or played melody and remainder of chords in the keyboard/synth line, and he sang a harmony line. Awesome! I just purchased a couple of the $12.00 Hi-Fi plugs myself. Like Melissa said - better than the crappy ones from the drug store. I once had a college professor suggest as a way to improve the listening experience in your car using ear plugs. His suggestion was to put in ear plugs and then increase the volume of the car stereo to compensate. That way you pushed the road noise level of the car down so that you could hear the quieter passages on the stereo better without having to make the louder passages too loud. I did this sometimes in college on my 3 hour drives back home because I had a noisy Ford Escort with no AC and the wind noise got bad on long trips. Probably not suggested for city driving or with passengers :) - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Melissa Jordan" To: Sent: Thursday, February 02, 2006 11:06 AM Subject: Re: Alloy: Audio and Oration > > Clif, > > Thanks for posting this info & the link! Actually, Elaine, that line (sung by Akiko Yano, if I'm not mistaken, who is--or was--the wife of Ryuichi Sakamoto, again if I'm not mistaken) was sampled in two pieces deliberately for the live performance so Thomas could trigger it rhythmically and have a little creative fun. I agree with your assessment of his choice to sing the harmony line once in Hyperactive. As a melody, it's not as strong as the regular lead line, but it's a pleasant and welcome departure-- indeed like Messrs. Fagen and Becker's schtuff! You know, in a world where I have to struggle to get people to remember SBMWS, it's a huge deal to me to be able to discuss Thomas' music with people who know it intimately. It's too much to ask to have such friends who are sharp enough on this stuff to recognize such details in regard to harmonies, etc. It's a dream!
