The announcement came ahead of a press conference in Melbourne tomorrow at which group members will reveal details of the upcoming tour. Formed in 1972, the band led by brothers Neil and Tim Finn had hits including I Got You and History Never Repeats, before disbanding in 1984. Neil Finn and drummer Paul Hester later formed the popular band Crowded House, which itself disbanded in 1996. Split Enz has only reunited for a couple of one-off shows over the past 22 years, including a performance at last year's annual Australian Record Industry Association (ARIA) Awards after being inducted into the Hall of Fame. It was their first gig together in 12 years. Last year, band members also struggled to cope with the death of Hester, who took his own life in Melbourne at the age of 46. Split Enz, comprising the Finn brothers, Eddie Rayner and Noel Crombie, plus Englishmen Nigel Griggs and Malcolm Green, have in the past said it would take something remarkable to reunite. Asked by Melbourne newspaper The Age last July if a reunion was on the cards, Rayner said: "It would have to be something pretty special." While it is known that Split Enz will play arena stages in Melbourne, Sydney, Adelaide, Brisbane and Perth, all other information is being kept under wraps. I am still gutted by the fact that I missed their last date in DC. I was out of the country when the tickets went on sale, and a friend was supposed to buy one for me. However, he became besotted with some new chickadee while I was gone, and his promise to me went out the door when he locked eyes with her. When I got back, the tickets were waaaay gone. (But I see Neil Finn every chance I get. He is amazing in concert.) I'm still friends with that guy. That girlfriend, however, is long gone. ;-) Elaine wrote: [You folks seem to know this already, but here it is officially..] Split Enz, the iconic New Zealand band which broke up 22 years ago, has re-formed and will soon tour Australia. Later, Crowded House was Neil's band, and Tim joined up. Good history of the band(s) here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/dna/h2g2/A669495 I missed them the last time Neil and Tim came through because of bad weather. We had black ice everywhere, and I could not make it to the venue (those who did brave the weather said it was great, as usual.) Elaine wrote: Paul? Are you going to be able to make this? I really liked the blue photo Keith took, had a kind of creepy vibe to it, like the Blue Man Group and Nash the Slash had a love child. You're going to have to come up to play a show in Canada, Thomas. The Corktown here in Hamilton would be a good venue, it's like our CBGB. Science Ninja Big Ten will even open for you. C'mon man, you'll love it in Canada, our winter has been increadably mild this year too. If not lowly Hamilton then you've got to play Toronto. C'mon, man, c'mon. Don't make me beg! Glad to hear hints dropped about a Golden Age Of Wireless DVD. Definetly on my MUST BUY list. But seriously, Hamilton. You'll love it. You can even crash on my chesterfield. That is....SO....HOT.... :) I too have been just barely processing how lucky I am to have seen thomas three times in a lil over a week. And it was really great to see the tech aspect of the show really pull together. There were indeed some shrill sounds at SF and mics cutting out there and in LA, but Anaheim was great. So many good memories...."Just Like Heaven"...cheering on Harper Robertson in SF...Miles and Brian resorting to bribery and theft to get the Red Devil posters (I tried flirting and it didn't work)...the dolby fans with their eyes completely glazed over during the set...Thomas busting a move a la Michael Jackson during Hyperactive and undulating in perfect time to that great bass line in "Suitcase" (I agree with john that it sounded like multilayered analog and trumped the recording even. awesome work on that)...me eating takeout gumbo in the HOB Pass the Line line so I could stand up front with the alloyed, well worth it getting a postset handshake from TD!...faking a computer crash (I think he was faking!) during hyperactive"...pulling off the synthesized voice parts and drawing the crowd in to such a novel sound....calling us awesome for coming out to see him...leading the crowd in clapping along to "Europa"...capturing the despair of "Leipzig"--it needed no explanation ...morphing from eastern bloc-cool in the trench coat to warm and confident in his suspenders and sans shades...being cool enough to perform "Science" as if it was his 10th perf instead of his 1000th of the song...hearing his voice ring louder and stronger with each show...catching up with our fearless leader in the swanky Foundation Room about 2:30 AM on Friday night...meeting the Alloys!...hearing New Toy!!...Thomas pretending to be stumped by the keyboard during wakeling's set...accidentally stealing John's cell phone and returning it to Disneyland at 3:30 AM...hearing Rick happily singing and humming "I Live In A Suitcase" and "Europa" and generally tolerating his girlfriend's fandom... dave wakeling yelling "WHERE's THOMAS DOLBY WHEN YOU NEED HIM??"...meeting the lovely and sweet Kathleen (thanks again KB!!)...hearing how TD ended up in LA because of Kathleen... and best of all finding out that we get to hear a full set of TD in the near future! Thanks Thomas for a *great* birthday weekend :) (So speak the Aquarii) Now I am happily tinkering away in the "midi for dummies" class I'm currently taking :) Ok now my dream set list (sure it will change but..)
