How to post images on LJ communities: 1. set up an LJ account (it's free) 2. set up a photobucket account (it's free) 3. save your images to photobucket 4. post to LJ community with pasted-in tag code to your images Hint - for large images that will blow out the page if they aren't "cut", here's how to post a photo behind a cut: yourimagetaghere! I'm bad at giving directions, so I'm sure that doesn't make sense at all..! but it's a thought, anyway... The pictures have this wonderfully surreal quality to them - just enough to make you salivate, but mysteriously fuzzy enough to make you wonder just what you're seeing. From the photos, it looks like he has a guitarist and a back-up singer with him. (Looks like someone got your fantasy gig, Lissu!) I am so very bummed that cameras are not allowed at HOB. I don't have a camera phone (which Thomas pointed out to me HOB couldn't take away from you - how delightfully devious of Our Fearless Leader, eh?), but considering how much effort it takes for me to snap a decent photo with my Nikon, I think anything I could take with a camera phone would be unviewable. :-) But sometimes, just pure emotion/memory beats out photography, right? (Or am I just rationalizing the fact that there will be no Kodak moment.) ;-) Only three more days... Only three more days... My gosh, that seems so weird, after hoping to see Thomas perform since, jeez, high school. Cheers, Melissa http://merujo.blogspot.com Robin Thurlow wrote: Oh, oooops!! I hadn't read this post yet. HOB's policy is just as well. At the SF show there was some nitwit directly in front of Mr. Dolby who kept snapping FLASH shots in his face from 2' away. In the interest of peace and harmony I didn't reach out and smack it out of their hand. But I wanted to, I wanted to... Granted, many of us would be mindful of not being disruptive to the performer's space, but there are always the selfish ones who refuse to think. What a great show it was, regardless of that and all the talkers/shouters. Here it is almost four days later and I'm still walking on air(waves). Then a card came up which read, "Tom? Tom? Tom Holby?" Ah, close but no cigar... Anyway back to Saturday night - I can't believe I forgot to report on the most exciting announcement. When Jay Siegan introduced Thomas, he said that soon TMDR was going to be performing in other clubs across the country. I hope that this is true but worry that it may be an exaggeration based on the SoCal dates. Fingers crossed everybody! Oh, and another obsessive detail, TMDR's left ear is still pierced and he was wearing a black, square, plastic earring in it. When we last saw Thomas, he had just shed his trench coat and was looking very trim and stylish. He spoke about many things that have changed since he was last onstage, one being that his kids had never seen him perform because they weren't even around the last time he played live. But one of them was there that night and he called 14 year old Harper to the stage. It being her first time in a nightclub, Thomas urged us to give her some slack. She hopped on stage and popped on TMDR's old glasses, indulging us by pulling them down her nose and looking at us in that special "Dolby" way (and I know you guys get what I mean!). He jokingly said that when she wears his specs she looks more like him than he does! Charm and talent run in that family (with those two sets genes how could she miss?) as evidenced by the spirited performance they did of "Europa and the Pirate Twins". I was very impressed by Harper's self-possession. She looked so comfortable it seemed like we were catching a glimpse of her and dad at home noodling around on the keyboards. They were both dancing and during the "bodyguard grabbed me" line, TMDR jerked his shoulder backwards. We were encouraged to sing and clap along which we did enthusiastically. Again I really loved the combination of old and new sounds, bringing back memories yet being unique. This may have been my favorite but I am a little biased about this particular song. ;-) Apparently I wasn't the only one who felt this way because I guy next to me shouted, "That rocked, man! Right on!" When Harper left the stage, TMDR called her a future superstar. I get a special pleasure out of seeing kids perform with their dads (Liam and Neil Finn were quite wonderful together) and it was particularly touching to see how chuffed Thomas was. His parents were pretty damn proud of him too! At this point we knew that the evening was coming to a close because Thomas said he promised himself he'd only do a few songs because he'd rather have gotten a few right than do a bunch that sucked. I assumed he was going to do "Science" and when he wryly said he wanted to perform a medley of his hit, I had a moment of unease because I thought, "Oh God, not the 'Get Out of My Mix' treatment!" He had a couple of false starts and apologized for his senior moments but ultimately launched into the song we know so well. TMDR inquired, "Do you guys dance or are you just looking at my gear?" I cracked up internally because all I could think of was Stan's sister Shelly from South Park lisping, "Are you looking at my headgear?" During the intro, Thomas thanked Jay Siegan for letting him experiment, his family for indulging him so he finally pursue his dream of becoming a professional musician (!), Notorious for letting him try out his new set, and us for coming out. He tantalized us by saying he might return to the stage with Notorious. TMDR really seemed to enjoy himself with this one as he bopped along. I know a lot of people aren't very fond of this tune but it literally changed my life so it holds a special place in my heart. This was a fun take on it and the audience responded accordingly with lots of dancing and some folks singing along. At the end, he thanked us for being his guinea pigs (anytime, Thomas, anytime!). Since the roadies didn't pack up the gear, I figured we'd get at least one piece for an encore. Once Thomas finally returned after several minutes of intense applause, he acknowledged that we had spent a long time queued up and that he needed the practice so he would do one more song. He didn't have anything set up so we were privileged to be able to watch him set the tracks up on the fly. He joked about this being an interesting experiment which started with the roadie firing up the computer program. I could read the folder and saw that the final tune was to be "Hyperactive!" We were instructed that if Alzheimer's kicked in and he forgot where middle C was, that we should just hum it for him. He ended up wiping a track and reprogramming it so it was an interesting window into the creative process for me. From my vantage point I could see each line as he built it so that was pretty damn cool. He got this odd, scraping sound from one of the old instruments that at first was a little painful but once he got it under control, it was really intriguing. The bouncy bass was what I liked best and really drove the song. He moved around quite a bit and even kind of hung off the edge of the stage. I was very reluctant for the evening to end but felt energized and deeply gratified that TMDR appeared to be having a wonderful time. Hopefully he got the love and encouragement he needed to inspire him to perform a full set for us in the near future. It was an especially emotional concert for me for several reasons. "The Golden Age of Wireless" was such a touchstone for me for many years. It saw me through painful dental procedures, calmed me before my first surgery, entertained me during numerous flights, and generally fed my soul. It meant so much to hear those songs live and be reminded of many people and places. Because Stephen and I are together due to our love of Dolby, it was incredibly poignant for us to finally be able to share this experience rather than just a recollection of a concert. After the set, we caught up with a certain Dr. De (good onya, Girl, I'm so proud!) who, if it's possible, is even more beautiful than she was in '97 when we last saw her. Monya, since I saw on the Notorious site (www.notoriousrocks.com where there is also a photo) that TMDR did come onstage with them to perform "New Toy" and "Just Like Heaven", can you be coaxed to describe it for us? Alas, we left for sushi soon after TMDR finished his solo concert. Well, thanks for indulging me and I hope I was able to let those people who couldn't make it feel like they got to share the experience in some small way. And if I screwed something up, please correct me! Twelfth of never on the sand, Europa ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V11 #21 ***************************
