I think Submarines would be one (copies of the single available in the lobby). I'm sure he'll do SBMWS since most people would expect that. I wouldn't mind hearing something new as a taste of anything he might be working on. That brings me to my question. Thomas has done so many styles over the years from album to album and even on a single album. What would you expect to hear in new music from him now? I always think of A&H as being his last album, and I have to remind myself of Gate to The Mind's Eye. I think I forget about it because it resides on my DVD shelf and not my CD shelf. But it really can be considered an album because it is all new work, but just not as vocal. Would you expect a new album to have a more acoustical sound like A&H, or something a bit more synth and beat heavy like some of the tracks on Mind's Eye and early work? I wouldn't mind seeing Thomas doing new work along the lines musically of The Postal Service. Thoughts? Okay, no more apologies, here goes from the very beginning: My better half and I arrived at the club at about 7:55 and were relieved to find only about 6 people in line ahead of us. The doors had been scheduled to open at 8 but we all know what that really means, don't we? An announcement came down that 8:30 was to be the magic time so we hung out, chatting up the folks around us. A very pleasant gentleman who works for Dolby Labs was behind us and we amused ourselves by trying to out-geek each other. Modestly, I think I won that contest ;-), but then again, I've had more years of practice. It was gratifying for me because these days I work with twenty-somethings who have never even heard "Science" so I tend to forget that there are other rabid fans still out there other than the Alloy faithful. We were joined by the beloved Brian Clayton and his lovely lady, Shani, which made for more spirited conversation, a good thing because 8:30 came and went with no sign of admittance. We were able to hear snatches of the sound check, however. Our appetites were whetted by bits of "Leipzig" and "Europa". Once we were finally let in at about 9, one of the doormen said TMDR wanted to do an extra long check and that's why we were left waiting. I looked at the guest list to see if I recognized any names but Kathleen's was the only one I knew. Since it said Kathleen Beller + 1, Brian and I speculated that one of their children would be there, underage though they may be. The Red Devil Lounge is TINY! I was really excited to discover what an intimate show it was going to be. We staked out a claim near the stage. There were two women who were sitting on the edge of it, one of them in the last stage of pregnancy, and I thought, how cool to be able to say to your kid, "You heard Thomas Dolby perform while you were still in the womb!" I ended up being smack in the center, basically close enough to reach out to Thomas' hand if he were to extend it. We saw Kathleen upstairs who is still tiny, young, and gorgeous as ever and with her was an attractive teenaged girl who definitely looked like a cross between the two of them. She was dressed in a grey tweed suit and seemed very poised. I wasn't sure exactly what to expect with this show. I suspected it would be somewhat stripped down like "Forty" with TMDR just playing keyboards but once I saw the stage setup, I was elated to see some old scientific equipment along with the synths and Apple (of course) computers. There was an oscillator of some sort, a signal generator (if I remember correctly), and something I had no idea what it was but it had a huge dial with lots of graduations on it and it looked primitive. Perhaps those people who took photos can enlighten us more. And there were lots of people taking photos, recording the show, and even some videocameras. The security was non-existent, an advantage you poor folks who are seeing him at the HOBs won't have, I'm afraid. I was near enough to be able to read the files names that were open on one of the computers so I knew we were going to hear "I Live in a Suitcase" along with "Leipzig". The owner of the club came out to introduce TMDR and stated that Thomas is one of his favorite artists. I found that very gratifying because he seemed psyched to have TMDR there which just added to the positive vibe of the evening. The crowd was definitely pumped about this first concert in ages and gave Thomas an enthusiastic welcome. He strode out wearing a long beige trench coat of sorts (maybe the one he's wearing in the Airwaves video?) which looked Russian or German or something. He had on a pair of retro headphones with tiny antennas extending from each of the earpieces. Because he also had donned a pair of small oval goggles with amber lenses, I couldn't help but think of John Malkovich playing Murnau in "Shadow of the Vampire". As with the stage which was a mix of old and new technology, he was also sporting a modern head mic. Let me just say right now that I am sick of people who are older than I looking younger than I do!! Some guy in the audience even asked him, "Where's the fountain of youth, Thomas?" Okay, total girl comments here: he is still incredibly attractive! His head was shaved but there was a trace of blond stubble on his cheeks. His face only had the barest hint of lines here and there and his blue eyes are still warm as ever. "Leipzig" was the opener and I really liked this interesting sound that was incorporated into it that reminded me of a dove coo. He used one of the old equipment pieces to make a siren-like sound that was also a really cool effect. I felt transported back to 1981 when he used to do this song as a one man band (or so I read - I never was fortunate enough to see him solo prior to this). He seemed calm and relaxed, surprising to me because God knows if I were performing for the first time in ages, I'd be a wreck. He introduced "I Live in a Suitcase" by describing the inspiration for it. He spoke of touring as a one man band all over Europe and seeing the beautiful cities and somehow ended up living in Los Angeles - "go figure". He had insomnia one night and went up to the Griffith Observatory at about 4 am and while he was looking over the city, there was a power outage which left about half of it dark. Then he was able to see the desert beyond and lo, the song was born. I suspected he would play this one since when we saw him in '97 he claimed it was one of his favorites. I especially enjoyed the rhythm tracks with the percussive bass line. The vocal effects that allowed him to sing with himself were very effective. TMDR must have been reading MJ's mind because next up was "Flying North". I, too, had listened to this song many a time while I was traveling so was delighted that he chose to play it. It started off quietly and I enjoyed listening to the audience reacting as they began to recognize it. I was impressed that TMDR was able to reproduce so many of the original sounds with his new synths and to seamlessly meld them with the new ones to create something familiar and yet novel. Thomas then took off the coat - he must have been roasting! He was dressed a dark grey shirt with a button-down collar, suspenders with tiny checks which resembled the ones he's wearing on the cover of the Europa 12" (is it any wonder I was able to win the "Who's the bigger Dolby geek contest?!), grey pants and black lace-up shoes. Considering this is the halfway point of the concert, I think I'll stop here and send this off. Stephen came in and reminded me that the time I've spent writing so far has been about 3 times longer than the show itself!
