Does anybody else see this? I have to admit a little surprise that Alloy did not get a heads-up on this San Francisco gig. Even if it was a last minute addition, I'm still surprised that TMDR's longtime core fan base here did not receive a "hey, FYI, Bay Area peeps!" type message. Am I being an a-hole in saying that? (Thomas, if you're out here on Alloy, you can tell me if I'm being a jerk. I won't be offended, honest!) I don't want to sound ungrateful in any way. Hell, I'm going to L.A., I'm going to hear Thomas perform for the first time ever, I'm going to meet some of you cool folks, and I get to see some other friends, too. (And eat Uzbek food at the cheesy, but great Central Asian place right around the corner from my hotel/motel/Holiday Inn (Express.) And, I'm making the trip with two really great friends whom I met over the Dolby music floating out of their dorm room in 1985. Mother of god. 20 years ago. (Half my life ago!) Anyway, I guess I'm just a little confused, considering that Alloy has been a very loyal group for so long. Just thinking out loud... Reality check. Does anybody else see this? Gosh. But I'm guessing there would have been a post soon. We sort of beat 'em to it. I think I was on the Dolby site the day before and that news wasn't there. When I used to play in bands gigs would come up fairly spontaneously and often on a whim. Maybe this came about that way. The good news is that we will be in SF in force! 8 of us are going (mostly musicians), one archeologist, and one scientist who is a fan of the scientist in one of his videos! It's too bad more folks can't make it but I'm getting the feeling that there will be others if these go well. And they might get recorded. I'd videotape and edit the event myself if I didn't think I'd get dragged out back by a guy named Fang for a kneecapectomy. Put stereos, tvs, computers, radios, monitors and anything with an LED in it on a powerstrip that you can powerdown when it's not in use. If there's room we'd love to be included in the dinner reservations and get a chance to meet fellow Alloyites in person. I know there's been discussion of nixing the pre show meet and greet but I hope Thomas doesn't mind us bugging him afterwards! By the way, for those who haven't seen The English Beat perform live you're in for a treat. When we saw them open for ABC in September they brought down the house! Does anybody else see this? Man, this was just so delicious...Stephen and I know one of the guys in Notorious (he's the son of a good friend) and I am on their email list which basically consists of getting info about the Red Devil Lounge. I knew they were playing that night and had I been in the habit of checking my email more than once every two weeks, I would have seen the TMDR announcement (see below) pronto. Anywho, /\/\iles and I figured that TMDR had to play his backyard eventually so we sat tight while the tickets went on sale for the SoCal shows. (What can I say, I'm saving my money to go to New Zealand for the Split Enz reunion!) I am very pleased that we were right. And I'm really touched that some of you guys asked about us . So, who's going to the SF show? Stephen and I will most likely be hanging out at our favorite sushi place called Ryoko's prior to the show. Anyone want to join us? Any chance we can coax you up this way, Ms. Jordan (glad to have you back, Melissa!!)? Very psyched indeed, Mary PS The HoJo show is sold out. I considered going, especially after his excellent performance on Hit Me Baby One More Time, but figured I couldn't talk Stephen into it. I idly wondered why the hell TMDR couldn't play there so I guess I got my answer! for red devil lounge e-mail list subscribers: this saturday, january 21 we are pleased to announce a special performance from electronic music innovator and synth legend thomas dolby. this will be his first public solo performance in 25 years. he will be performing a short set from 10:00pm - 10:30pm prior to the closing show from the popular retro dance band notorious . tickets are available for purchase at ticketweb. limited seating is available. doors are at 8:00pm. this show will not be announced any where else. red devil lounge upcoming shows - ----------------------------------------- 01.19 move / velvet james 01.20 wonder bread 5 / the brodys 01.21 thomas dolby / notorious 01.25 emergenza festival / (through 01/30) 01.31 howard jones 02.02 yardsale project / bag of toys 02.03 young dubliners 02.04 fastball 02.07 artist in residency: nya jade 02.10 pop rocks 02.11 notorious 02.12 beatnuts 02.14 artist in residency: nya jade 02.15 emegenza / (through 2.18, 2.20) 02.21 artist in residency: nya jade 02.22 dave's true story 02.24 wonder bread 5 02.25 pop rocks 02.26 souls of mischief 03.08 exene cervenka & the original sinners 03.11 sir mix-a-lot 05.17 abc 05.18 abc 1695 polk street | san francisco | 415-921-1695 - ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - ---- Powered by List Builder Click here to change or remove your subscription ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V11 #15 ***************************
