I was watching music videos earlier, and a video by Cameo came on--remember their lead singer (whose name I don't know), whom I presume is the "brother in the codpiece" immortalized in Thomas' version of "Hot Sauce"? Bright red "codpiece", too! ;^)Okay, I don't know whether it was Thomas himself who wrote these lines, or George Clinton, but anyway, it hit me what the line "I think he likes his ladies all sweet and sugary" may be in reference to: the name of the song was "Candy"!!!! :^) > > Yeah, yeah, I imagine you guys chatted about this years ago, but I had completely forgotten about "Candy"--I only remembered "Word Up". I have no way of expressing how grateful I am that you went through the messages and did this. I was going to do it tonight and now I don't have to :) For Anaheim, my husband and I, and our friend Ed will be joining the group.. so I'm Elaine3. That makes 7 for dinner so far, on a reservation for 7. Regarding Hollywood, we have 9 people on our 8-rez.. and I think I just talked one of my husband's co-workers into joining us (he's researching tickets right now). So I might call down & add three more if possible. Anybody else!? Shout out !! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Jan 2006 18:05:00 -0700 From: John McJunkin Subject: Re: Alloy: ROLL CALL Hey Gang! Indeed, big thanks Monya. Actually, my wife will be joining in for the Anaheim show, so it's John2 that evening. There is a remote possibility that others may join as well, but I doubt if they'll be in for dinner. I don't know if any of you have ever seen shows at either of these HOB venues, but I've been to both, and unless there is a huge turnout for Dramarama and/or English Beat, we will not be elbow-to-elbow, and should be able to get into a good position to see the show up close and personal. Neither of these venues are very large. Here's hoping that there will be a "Dolby. Live. 2006." t- shirt available! The excitement continues to mount! I'm extremely thrilled that Thomas is playing shows in California! It will be the highlight of the year if not a lifetime. It will be a wonderful series of events that you have all made a great effort to enjoy. I have to admit.. I read all your notes with a certain sadness.. since I am now living part of the year in Bangkok.. and I am here till March. (That part doesn't make me sad.. it's fantastic here!) But my place in LA is only 10 minutes from the Hollywood HOB.. so it is doubly painful.. since it would have been so easy and so much fun to join you all for the dinner and the amazing opportunity to see Thomas play. And then we could have just continued the party at my place!! Damn!! I guess I used up my good fortune when I lived in Seattle years ago. A friend of mine worked for Capitol Records at the time and would occasionally give me promo cassette tapes of various bands and artists. One day he gave me a tape from a new artist. It was called "The Golden Age of Wireless" and I ended up using it as my personal soundtrack for months.. unti he gave me a copy of "The Flat Earth" Awhilie later he asked me if I really enjoyed the Thomas Dolby tapes. I enthusiastically responded and he thought that was good because he had a free ticket to a Dolby concert in Vancouver, B.C. (About a two hour drive from Seattle) Of course.. I arranged to go and the concert was amazing. Unfortunatley.. I was so enthralled with the show that I don't now remember when it was or the order of songs or much else. The one thing that sticks in my mind was the song that Thomas ended up with a box on his head with photos of his face on each side of the box. He had a microphone to his box face and I think the audience was as stunned as I was when Thomas popped out in another place on stage a little later.. it was a double inside the box. I wish I could remember that concert better.. particulartly as my appreciation of him as a musical artist and an entertainer contiued to grow through the subsequent albums. I dislike envy as an emotion.. so I'll try to maintain some composure here. I'll just wish all of you the most memorable evenings and please give Thomas my regards and thanks for playing near my other home!! And let him know that if he were to play a concert here in Bangkok.. it would make this other City of Angels an even better place to live.. and I'd be in the front row! Have fun everyone!!
