Excellent interview!! I'm so happy! Thanks so much, Paul, for the reference!! It's so good to see him, too :) xx ~robin - -----Original Message----- From: owner-alloy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-alloy@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Paul Baily Sent: Wednesday, March 09, 2005 1:32 AM To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: Alloy: New Thomas interview on ...the Onion? The Onion AV club to be exact: Noel Murray starts with: "To the generally pop-literate, Thomas Dolby is best known for his 1983 novelty hit "She Blinded Me With Science." But that reputation bothers Dolby diehards, who know his contributions to music in the '80s reach beyond one silly technopop single." I like it already. :-) P. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 07:47:31 -0300 From: "Paulo" Subject: Alloy: Interview Great interview I loved specially what Thomas said about 80's electronic music, when to "program" a song was a crime. Now, as Dolby said, there is an altar made out of such kind of music. About Prefab Sprout he said : "And then Prefab Sprout, you know, which is a band I love as much as I love my own music. A couple of their albums were as important to me as a couple of my best albums. I was very lucky to have that variety to what I did." THAT'S FANTASTIC TO HEAR IT FROM MR. DOLBY I also loved this bit : "People would like to believe that Morrissey lived in a housing project on the outskirts of Manchester, and that he got up every day, dressed in rags, and wrote a couple of heartbreaking songs before his tea brewed. But by the time most people had heard of Morrissey, he was already a millionaire. I've got nothing against him. I think that's great." He goes on : "But it's an unfair requirement to make of musicians to expect them to have no shoes on their feet, or it's not "authentic." That's not reasonable. That was one of the many things that made me uncomfortable in Britain at the time, when I was there. UNFORTUNATELY THAT'S AN INTEGRAL PART OF THE "SCHOOL OF THINKING" INGRAINED IN ROCK'N'ROLL..., BORN OUT OF THE PUNK "PHILOSOPHY", ALSO EMBRACED BY THE INDIE ROCK THING. ...A lot of damage has been made to music since... ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 10 Mar 2005 21:59:12 -0500 From: Sean Carolan Subject: Alloy: A Web Radio Reminder Folks, Y'know when somebody tells you to check out something on the net, and you file it away thinking "oh, yeah, I have to do that", and then completely fail to remember it ever again? Here's a reminder. Check out Altrok Radio... http://www.altrok.com/streams.shtml Let me know if you have any problems. No, really. 'Course, I could say "and I'm playing the extended Flying North on Saturday", but that'd be silly - you already own it, right? But I do have the new New Order...and based on a recommendation here on this list, I've been playing The Koreans for a little while, too. And a bunch of other stuff that may make you happy. Dare I mention that I definitely wanna get my hands on the ten or so songs Thomas has in his head? The Onion interview was an excellent public reintroduction. If there's a plan being executed here, that was a good place to start. But I wonder whether it might not be fun to first get The Cube back together... ...and, on a slightly tangential topic (but only slightly) what's this I hear about Lene Lovich playing a festival in Vienna on March 25? And a new album, "Shadows And Dust"? Hmm.... http://www.stereosociety.com/lenelovich.html - -Sean Carolan Editor, Altrok.com & Altrok Radio ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V10 #13 ***************************
