["Sally" <sally.allan@] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Mon, 17 Jan 2005 22:52:39 -0500 From: Sean Carolan <hubcity@exit109.com> Subject: Alloy: Have I Mentioned The Web Radio Station? Folks, A little while back, I contacted Paul Baily with a tentative invitation to check out my web radio station. (The "tentative" bit was entirely due to my not yet having gotten the hang of telling people about this sort of thing.) He was nice enough to listen, and nice enough to provide some kind words as feedback. I suggested that I'd want to tell the list about what I was doing, but I didn't want to get dismissed as a wanton spammer (at least, as wanton as spammers go.) He thought (quoting here) "the 'Get Lost You Spamming Miscreant!' responses would be negligible". Besides, I have "Neon Sisters" in my "classics" rotation... So, um, "hi". I've built a web radio station that people of a certain sort seem to like. I strongly suspect Alloyites are exactly that sort. Here's the story... I was once a DJ at the best radio station in America, at least according to Rolling Stone. (Of course, that was after I left, but it was even better when I was there, y'know.) That'd be classic alternative rock station FM106.3 in Central New Jersey, which fell victim to hard times and got sold to a company whose definition of "alternative" was "Dido". (Nothing against Dido, but...come on.) What to do? Well, there's this here Intarweb thingy, so I created Altrok. http://www.altrok.com Basically, I got tired of "mainstream alternative" and decided to whine about it on the web. But then it turned out you could do your own radio on the web, too (courtesy Live365.) So I'm doing it: http://www.altrok.com/streams.shtml ...and suddenly, I'm getting written up in the local paper, and chosen as a Live365 editor's pick, and fans of other defunct classic alternative stations (and some not so defunct) are putting links to my station on their tribute pages, and...people are listening. Much of what I play is brand new and may never go anywhere. Some of it is classic and never went anywhere when it was new, but is now used in commercials all the time...because, I suspect, everyone in the advertising industry used to listen to stations like mine. What I try to do is play independent alternative rock, tending (not exclusively, but significantly) toward danceable. I just try to pick things that aren't cliched (unless, of course, it's a cliche that I like. That's 'cause it's my station. Neener.) You might have an alternative station near you that does this - I'm just trying to do it better (for limited values of "better", I suppose.) It's difficult to describe, though, so I probably should just give you a taste of the playlist from a few days from now. It's below. Much of it you won't recognize on first glance, but some of you may go "ohmigod, he's playing that? I thought only I'd heard of it..." There are some more popular anchor songs, and some music shows up in a "power" rotation (you'll see those songs twice on a day's playlist.) It's about 4-5 hours long because people rarely listen for longer - plus, there's a bonus - if you hear something you like, it'll be on again 4-5 hours later, at least until the next day's playlist starts. It changes every day, and it's pretty good sounding on a broadband connection. (Unless you have an MP3 Pro decoder installed - then it sounds *great*, as in "CD quality", on a broadband connection.) Meanwhile, I've got a group for announcements here: http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/altrok/join (A couple of weeks ago, I gave away Erasure DVDs and, if you were in NJ, Fishbone tickets. That's sort of an enticement...) At any rate, I hope you can tune in. Let me know what you think, and let me know if you need any help connecting. - -Sean Carolan (Here's that playlist for a few days hence...interestingly enough, on tomorrow's playlist, the program I wrote to pull music for the station chose to put Thomas and Lene Lovich back to back. I didn't write it to do that sort of thing, but sometimes I guess these sorts of things just kinda work out...) - ------- Bloc Party - Helicopter - Helicopter (CD Single) Keene, Tommy - My Mother Looked Like Marilyn Monroe - Songs From The Film Faint, The - Desperate Guys - Wet From Birth Miss World - For F---'s Sake - Altrok Radio Session - ------- UNKLE - Invasion - Never, Never, Land Interpol - Evil - Antics Green Day - Holiday - American Idiot Doves - Catch The Sun - Lost Souls - ------- Trembling Blue Stars - The Sea Is So Quiet - The Seven Autumn Flowers White, Andy - The Fortune Teller's Right - Boy 40 Clash, The - Police And Thieves - Sandinista! Sean, it was bounced to me because it was too long. Messages of more than 7000 characters are interpreted as possible spam by our filter, and so I need to review it. Most of these *are* spam... your message was mixed in with nearly 20 others when I sorted through them last night. I've forwarded yours through (I hope.. haven't had to use that code in a while!) so it shall soon be posted if all goes well. xx ~robin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Jan 2005 15:47:55 GMT From: hubcity@exit109.com Subject: RE: Alloy: That's Odd... Robin, Thanks so much - it definitely went over that limit. As luck would have it, today's the day the playlist chooser picked the Dolby/Lovich two-fer.
