This is on behalf of my friend who is a Bay Area musician. She has a gig next week but her keyboard is acting strangely. She's wondering if there's anything she can do on her own to help matters, as the shop she took it to gave her a 3-week turnaround time. It's a Korg x3 with a 3.5 floppy drive. She's getting disk errors & thinks it needs a good cleaning on the inside, or maybe a new floppy. She's had the board for 10 years & has never had any trouble with it before. If anyone has any tech support advice, I know she would appreciate it! Thanks as always :) xx ~robin ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jan 2005 11:33:11 -0700 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: keyboard technical question She might be able to find a floppy cleaning kit at a computer store. I think they have a floppy with a cleaning pad instead of a disk inside and cleaning solution. That might help. If that doesn't work try backing up the disks to brand new floppies. The disks themselves will wear out as time goes by and lose their magnetic properties. It could also be a loose connection inside the keyboard. If she's technically compitent tell her to open the keyboard and check to make sure the ribbon cable is properly inserted and hasn't come loose. It could also be an unseated chip on the motherboard that controls the floppy drive. If the keyboard is old and transported a lot chips can come unseated. Some keyboards, like the Ensoniq Mirage, are notorious for this problem. It could be the floppy drive itself is dieing. I'm pretty sure the Korg x3 just uses a normal PC floppy. I've forwarded it along to her. She actually has already brought the keyboard to be fixed, at a place that promises to have it ready by Friday, but I'm sure your advice will come in very handy for her in the future. One interesting side note... she mentioned Gary Numan had signed her keyboard with silver paint pen a long time ago & it's staring to fade (the repair guy promised he would not damage it)! It made me think of our discussions about preserving Thomas' metallic pen autograph on keyboard. How is that holding up, by the way? xx ~robin Yahoo! Mail - 250MB free storage. Do more. I avoid touching it like it'll give me the plague as it does smudge a little.
