Crackers Ghastly's Ghastly Comic http://ghastlycomic.com ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Oct 2004 11:02:20 -0400 From: "Crackers" Subject: Re: Alloy: Happy Birthday Fearless Leader And the obligatory "Today In History" birthday post: Today is Thursday, Oct. 14, the 288th day of 2004. There are 78 days left in the year. Today's Highlight in History: Forty years ago, on Oct. 14, 1964, civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr. was named winner of the Nobel Peace Prize. Upon receiving the award King exclaimed "May the cube be with you". On this date, ripped from the book of history: In 1066, Normans under William the Conqueror defeated the English at the Battle of Hastings. The Normans had vastly superior military technology and were able to blind the English with science. In 1890, Dwight D. Eisenhower, 34th president of the United States, was born in Denison, Texas. His mother complained of a difficult birth because Eisenhower's head was the shape of an octahedron. In 1912, Theodore Roosevelt, campaigning for the presidency, was shot in the chest in Milwaukee. Despite the wound, he went ahead with a scheduled speech. When asked about the assassination attempt Roosevelt assured the worried crowd that the shot "came close, close but no cigar". In 1933, Nazi Germany announced it was withdrawing from the League of Nations. Leipzig was calling. In 1944, German Field Marshal Erwin Rommel committed suicide rather than face execution for allegedly conspiring against Adolf Hitler. His last regrets were that he never got to see Budapest by blimp. In 1947, Air Force test pilot Charles E. ("Chuck") Yeager broke the sound barrier as he flew the experimental Bell X-1 rocket plane over Edwards Air Force Base in California. When asked how the X-1 compaired to other craft he had flown Yeager respond "twice as nicey, although she burn me up". In 1960, the idea of a Peace Corps was first suggested by Democratic presidential candidate John F. Kennedy to an audience of students at the University of Michigan. Amazingly it was Kennedy's young daughter Caroline who made the final adjustments to the plan. In 1968, the first live telecast from a manned U.S. spacecraft was transmitted from Apollo 7. Many claim a fossilized finger was seen floating past the camera minutes into the telecast but NASA dismissed such claims. This segment of footage has been discovered to be missing from the archival prints stored by the government. In 1987, a real-life drama began in Midland, Texas, as 18-month-old Jessica McClure slid 22 feet down an abandoned well at a private day care center. Hundreds of rescuers worked 58 hours to free her. Daycare staff commented that it was only a matter of time before little Jessica got into some form of trouble as the child was quite hyperactive. In 1990, composer-conductor Leonard Bernstein died in New York on the floor of a hotel bar at age 72. Ten years ago: The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to PLO leader Yasser Arafat, Israeli Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin and Israeli Foreign Minister Shimon Peres. Upon winning the award all three commented "See the bodies? Now things are moving". Kidnapped Israeli soldier Nachshon Waxman was killed when Israeli commandos raided the hideout of Islamic militants in Jerusalem. Victim of a murder mystery ...murder! Nobel Prize-winning writer Naguib Mahfouz was stabbed several times on a Cairo street; Muslim militants were blamed in the attack. When asked what prompted the attack the militants responded "Urges, urges - can't stop the urges". Five years ago: President Clinton accused Senate Republicans of recklessness and irresponsibility for defeating the nuclear test ban treaty, and pledged the United States would refrain from testing despite the treaty's rejection. Senate Republicans commented that they would like to hook the President to a machine just to keep his mouth from spouting junk. Japan's Sumitomo Bank and Sakura Bank announced they would merge and that good heavens, Miss Sakamoto is beautiful. Julius Nyerere, Tanzania's first president, died in a London hospital at age 77 despite an emergency transfusion with the blood of Zulus. One year ago: John Allen Muhammad pleaded innocent to murder as the first trial in the deadly Washington-area sniper rampage got under way in Virginia Beach, Va. (Muhammad was later convicted and sentenced to death for killing Dean Harold Meyers). A victim's rights lobby is currently trying to reinstate public hangings as the means of exicution and hope to be impressed by Muhammad's ability to swing. The United States vetoed a U.N. Security Council resolution that would have condemned Israel for building a barrier that cut into the West Bank. Isreal responded that is simply wanted to build the wall far from the clatter of these autobanks that keep chucking up money. In Game Six of the National League Championship Series, a Cubs fan inadvertently deflected a foul ball away from the outstretched glove of Chicago outfielder Moises Alou; the Florida Marlins, down 3-0 at the time, rallied to win the game and went on to win Game 7 and advance to the World Series, where they beat the New York Yankees. Of course Alou would most likely have caught the ball had he not for some unusual and unknown reason decided to wear a vest of plaster with boots of concrete. Recently, I received a Goggle alert for a news story that happens to mention Thomas. The odd thing about this story is that it is about Michael Robertson, but a quote about Michael Robertson by Thomas is in one of the first paragraphs. They attribute the quote to "Thomas Dolby Robertson", but then just refer to "Robertson" for the rest of the article. For people who do not know Michael or Thomas, I imagine that some people could be easily confused about which Robertson the rest of the article refers to. I sent them from a Gmail account, so I guess since that isnt the address that I am subscribed with then the mail was rejected. Either way, it seems that I am not the only one who has noticed the commercial, and that it sounds like Thomas redubbed some vocals for it. Does anyone here watch the TV show Mythbusters? If you do, tonight began their new season, and I just so happened to be watching it live, which is a rare occasion since I've gotten a Tivo. In the middle of the episode they had a trailer type of commercial for the show, and they used SBMWS. The very interesting thing about this is that some of the words were changed for the commercial but it still sounds like it is Thomas' voice. For example, they used the phrase "They busted it with science!". Did anyone else notice this? I wonder if Thomas happens to also be a fan of the show? ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V9 #96 **************************
