I was at a conference there last week (Hurricane Ivan made the prep a bit interesting, but everything turned out OK). I was in a particularly "carpe diem" mood for this one, since my father died just a month ago after a long and painful summer and this conference is my chance to hook up with friends I haven't seen for ages. So anyway, was working hard all day and partying hard at night. On Thursday night, I took a small group to the Mid-City Lanes Rock-n- Bowl, which offers you the opportunity to bowl while listening to a concert. We heard a most excellent zydeco band (Keith Frank, sort of a funk/soul/zydeco) and were just about to start bowling when we decided to dance instead. Less of a learning curve for some of us. Still, despite it being a few hours off, I felt a bit transported to the world of "I Love You Goodbye." The fact that one of my zydeco/bowling companions was a young man with relatively little hair who sported a beret-looking cap sort of added to the effect. My mood, sort of a melancholy affection, certainly fell into line. Wonder if I was visiting one of the inspirations for the song? - -Beth P.S. No vehicles were stolen, however. One of the parish's (NOT county's) finest was stationed right outside the door of the place. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V9 #86 **************************
