I'm working on a series of films now.. so I'm sending out an E-mail to friends.. and thought a couple of you all might enjoy a read as well. Don't read if you bore easily! So.. things are going well here in Grand Turk. We've finished the first film.. we shot only 6 days for that one! It was a scramble.. but today the group is starting to shoot the second film while I prepare for the third one. So for two weeks my work will be more relaxed and give me a bit of time to enjoy the island. I was scheduled to work on the fifth film of this series but they have now canceled it.. which will mean that I will now probably be heading back to Los Angeles about April 20 instead of mid May.. but after one and a half months here I don't mind going home again. Grand Turk is not as beautiful as many of the Caribbean islands.. being fairly flat instead of the mountains and hills and tropical forests often found in the Carib. Instead it's more like the Bahamas.. in fact the Turks and Caicos face the open Atlantic Ocean and are nearby neighbors to the Bahamas.. and we're actually about 150 miles north of the Caribbean proper.. which starts below the string of Islands that include Cuba, Puerto Rico and Jamaica. If we travel about 600 miles west we'd be in Miami. Anyhow.. the people here are extremely friendly and warm.. like most island people. They don't have the stresses that make people grumpy. Instead they live in a very beautiful setting and the pace of life is much slower. It isn't really a top tourist destination.. mostly it's a spot that scuba divers like because of the relatively shallow water (40 feet) surrounding the island and then a couple hundred yards offshore there is a coral "wall" that drops off to 8000 feet! It's called the Columbus Passage. Scuba divers like to drift along the edge and down a bit over the edge of the wall.. where there is a huge amount of sea life to observe. There are also humpback whales that come here to give birth between late January and early April. A few of us took a boat the other day to try and see some whales. As we moved along in the boat we were getting close to the area we thought we might see some. Suddenly about 150 yards in front of the boat a huge whale launched itself out of the water straight up in a "breech". It was an awesome sight.. though unfortunatly I didn't yet have my camera ready. It splashed down with an enormous spray of water.. and we ended up following this whale and her calf for the rest of the nearly 3 hours we were out. She passed very near the boat a few times. Her calf stayed close by.. and even though she didn't breech again it was fun to watch her swim with her calf. She would surface every couple minutes to breathe and then go under again. Since her calf was only about 2 weeks old she wouldn't go into the deeper water.. which allowed us to see her many times on the surface. At the end of the trip the whale was very close and seemed to stay in one place with her calf. The captain gave the signal and a few of the people on board got to jump into the water and swim over to where she was. I didn't yet have my mask and snorkel (they arrive in a shipment later this week) so it was pointless for me to get into the water. The whale soon moved away but there were a few people that got photos straight down looking at the mother and her calf. Very cool stuff.. So.. that's about it for the moment. I can recieve E-mail here without any problems so if you want to let me know how you're doing I'd enjoy that. Meanwhile.. I'm getting ready to do a scuba dive later next week to a shipwreck from the 1600s. Should be fun. Ciao for now..
