It would be extremely generous of you to host the Curio. As many of you will recall, I'd proposed this years ago and was going about gathering images from everyone (which I still have stored!!) as well as designing an image-based finding aid for it. Then my marriage went kaplooie & everything became something of a blur I'm afraid. but YES, it would be amazing if this project could be carried out and hosted at Russ' site. Thank you Russ! I can begin looking for the items I have stored already. I think I saved them on a Zip disk and will have to do a bit of hunting, here in my office after hours, as my little computer at home has no Zip drive (and no nothing else either, come to think of it!). Russ, if you'd like to see the finding aid image I can try to find that too. xxx ~r Yahoo! You can come to NY and help me move if you like..! (and yes, this is an open invitation to all Alloyites to help me schlep boxes across town... I'll pay you in absinthe & free bellydance lessons) My neighborhood is beginning to go very bad - what with local drug gangs, some very violent incidents involving weapons, vandalism and so on.. in amongst the usual drunkenness of the clubs letting out @ 2am. For a while, there was a guy covered in prison tattoos who would wait for me by my building and try to get in my way when I came home. Thankfully a friend came out of the gallery and scared him one day and he never came back (hooray for my scary artist friends) Going off and being by myself is pretty much what I have resolved to do this year. It's similar to what Bill says about "The Jewel In The Crown" in a way. I've decided to stop caring when people tell me I should "find someone" and just revel in being on my own. There is such freedom in being alone, being able to think and act on my own behalf. I really enjoy it & have no need for attachments other than my responsibilities to my little ferrets. As long as I can keep them happy, then I'm happy :) This year there are all sorts of celestial events to look forward to, as well. Since I'm no longer in the center of town where there's lots of light pollution, I'll have a chance at seeing some of them. They include a visible comet, a very active meteor shower, and some nice things having to do with Saturn (I have to look these up). Also the Transit of Venus, which I hope to see if I can get to the local observatory. It's getting all the way up to 5 degrees Fahrenheit today. Better go find your swimsuits, ladies and gentlemen in the US - it's going to be a scorcher. How is the weather elsewhere in the world? xx ~robin ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 9 Jan 2004 13:31:23 EST From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: Weather Weather here in Hollywood is miserable!! I'm suffering through temps in the low to mid 60s!! Damn.. I've got the electric blanket out.. my sweaters.. and today.. it's GRAY! I already miss the beautiful blue skies that were here just yesterday!! But.. they'll probably be back tomorrow.. thankfully! I would shed a tear for you having to suffer through your temps in the 60s, but it would freeze the moment it hit my cheek (dropping to -10F tonight!!) ... so I won't. :) xx ~robin Yahoo! That is an absurd temp! You know.. this is a big country.. and so far.. we are still able to move from state to state without being arrested by the SS. Since you're moving anyhow.. I would take advantage of it before those laws change.. and just make the move to a warmer climate! My motto.. Winter is something that you should go to.. not something that should come to you! Let me know when you need a vacation in Hollywood! I'll turn off the heat for awhile to help you acclimate! Not good to thaw out too quickly! Stay warm!! Ciao for now.. The thing about moving is that I have to stay where my job is... I'm one of those lucky few who loves her job. It's okay with the cold temps here, just a bit annoying - though I do get to layer on my velvets and winter things. The really cold weather only lasts a couple of months. And I keep reminding myself that this is like a *warm* day in Alaska. I have trouble with hot temperatures... when it heats up in the warmer states, I just can't imagine how anyone can survive it. That round, shiny, hot, yellow thing in the sky becomes my sworn enemy in the summertime, even here in rain-soaked upstate NY. I've warned my sister that when I visit her in Florida next year, I'll spend my time on the beach cowering under a parasol. xx ~robin Yahoo! I used to live in Florida.. which is why I suffer with mid 60s! I miss the heat and humidity in Miami Beach! And the ability to go right into the water.. without that flinch when your toes first hit. The water temp in the summer was 88 degrees! It was fantastic! I also miss those huge summer thunderstorms. It was so cool to watch that black wall of cloud come out of the Everglades and crash down with torrential rain every afternoon at 4:00pm like clockwork.. then clear off in time for a magnificent sunset. LA is dry.. which is okay sometimes.. and it is admittedly a bit easier to sleep without 90 degree temps and high humidity. Guess I'll stay for now. So Robin.. perhaps you should winter here in CA and summer up in the frozen north? That way you maintain a steady 60 - 65 temp all year long! You can wear as many layers as you'd like.. and you can keep your fair skin from getting roasted! And Keith.. I agree.. a week or two of winter sports and snow appreciation is great fun! But then.. I have to get back to normal life where I don't have to shovel snow and watch for deadly icicles dropping on my head! Ciao for now.. And Happy New Year too! The sun finally broke through here!! The day is good! We get the best of both worlds - a simple morning drive to enjoy the winter sports, and an evening drive home to mild dry cool weather. I do miss those southern thunderstorms that we used to get when I lived in Louisiana. Those were exciting. Sometimes it seems like it would rain all day non stop. Here, we get just a few short showers. > And Keith.. I agree.. a week or two of winter sports and snow appreciation > is great fun! But then.. It has been in the 70's during the day and dropping in to the 50's at night. I do have to agree that the summers here can be quite brutal, but that's what air conditioning is for. Just go from one air conditioned environment to another, and sweating like crazy in between! Here in Orlando, we dont have the nice sea breazes as we're too far inland, but we definitely have those ~4pm showers everyday during the season. As for the images, yes anything you can send would be much appreciated to help get this project started. When you say "image-based finding aid" what exactly are you referring to? It sounds interesting. - -Russell http://www.tmdrfan.com/ ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 09 Jan 2004 20:20:26 -0800 From: Monya De Subject: Alloy: Re: [alloy-digest V8 #218] oh, which indian movie was that???? Weather here is hot & humid with storms threatening, temp is probably early 30's C. Here's how it looks at the beach ten minutes walk from where I'm now living: Moved house in December from the big smoke to a small seaside town... mostly unpacked now. Still commuting 90+mins each way to said big smoke for work right now which is getting more un-fun by the day, even so, worth it. Robin dearest, best of luck with your move, sounds like it's going to make a world of difference! And I'd gladly offer to help out with it but geez louise, that's a bit of a drive. :-) cheers, Paul. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V9 #3 *************************
