Which items to bid on to not miss this once in a > lifetime event? We would like to keep a collection complete in some way. The AZ-1 I am going after with both guns blazing. It is something I have coveted for a very, very long time. I've had need for a proper MIDI strap-on for some time and owning a Dolby strap-on is a real dream. Thomas told me previously that the unit is busted (which is why he now uses the Roland strap-on) but from the description of the problem I'm confident it's something I can fix. I've been calling in a lot of favours to put together the scratch to snatch this item and it's already elevated way beyond the street price of an AZ-1. It's obvious that I'm going up against a memorabilia collector in whoever this suzco63 person is who is bidding against me. Looks like I'm in for a real fight on this one. Wish me luck gang, I'm going to need some serious mojo. Of all the Dolby items up for auction the PPG Wave 2.2 synthesizer would be the "crown jewel". Apart from the increadable history of that one unit itself the PPG Wave 2.2 is an analogue synth with a street value anywhere from $1000 to $2000 USD, depending on condition. Thomas's unit looks a little ragged around the edges, but the memorabilia value of it alone is likely to make it end up nearer the $2000+ mark. Were it not for the fact that I covet the AZ-1 most of all the Dolby gear I'd be going after the PPG with everything I've got. It really is the gem of the auction (unless Thomas is auctioning off his Fairlight, now there's a machine with a nice piece of history). It was hovering around $650 for the longest time but I knew that people would be just waiting to try and snipe on that one and that in the last few hours of the bidding the price was going to go up, up, up. It's currently at $1500 and I wouldn't be too suprisedif it ends up closing at almost double that. Had I won a lottery you could bet that every Dolby synth up for auction would have been mine with perhaps the exception of the M1R. The mixers and other assorted studio gear that I've seen so far don't particularily interest me. Is this the last batch of gear Thomas, or is there more yet to come. This certainly seems like the "grand finale" of the auction and that PPG will definetly make quite a prized feather in someone's cap. I'm surprised, in fact, that you're parting with the machine as I know it would be very unlikely were I to own one that anything could persuade me to part with it. But hell, I'm such a pack rat I won't even part with my CZ-101. Has any Alloyites won items from the previous Dolby lot? We should get together and perform a show with all of Thomas's gear is enough of us win it. You know,,, re-reading this sentance from my previous post brings to mind a conversation we had her ages and ages ago about "Plaster Casters". Maybe that's the grand finale item Thomas is planning to auction off last. Crackers Ghastly's Ghastly Comic http://ghastlycomic.com ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Nov 2003 13:16:10 -0500 From: Russell Milliner Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V8 #194 I recently purchased off of eBay two "Making Music" magazines with Thomas articles. In one of the articles there is a side column where Thomas talks about some of the equipment on the Aliens tour. One of the pieces mentioned in the article (Yamaha SPX90) went up for auction. I agree with Crackers, if I had the cash, I would have purchased the whole lot of equipment. Here is the side column: - --------- "When I decided to put this band together I wasn't going to take a Fairlight series three out on the road, they're even more vulnerable now because of the hard disc drives. And conversely, a lot of the sampling I needed could be done with cheaper samplers. Myself, the other keyboard player and the drummer all needed amounts of sampling so it make sense for us all to get the same machine. Then we could interchange sounds, and if one obroke down, we'd still have some back-up. "So I designed myself a set-up. I wanted a good piano sound, a bit of analogue synthesiser and some samples, then I wanted a complete mis in stereo, a couple of effects, and I wanted to be able to memorise the whole thing so that pressing one button on the Yamaha KX5 remote keyboard would change everything in all the modules. "I got a rack with a Roland MKS20, which I like for the piano sounds, a Super JX module, an Akai S900 plus one of their MIDI mixers, and a Yamaha SPX90 for chorusing and short delay, plus a MIDIFEX which I've always liked. There's also a J L Cooper MIDI link which basically outputs a different combination of numbers and channels when you feed it one program number. It works a treat. "Funnily enough, right after that the Roland D-50 came out which is a combination of a sampled front end, a bit of analogue synth with some effects built in, and in stereo. Great minds, eh . . . " - --------- Also note that I will be eventually posting the full interview on my website, with the pictures. ttfn, - -Russell http://www.tmdrfan.com/ Crackers wrote: >----- Original Message ----- >From: >To: >Sent: Saturday, November 29, 2003 2:55 AM >Subject: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V8 #194 > > > > >>Attention: >> >>All who know their stuff: >> >>Which auctions are worth it on here? This Casio AZ-1 has been on my mind all day and I've been so nervous about being outbid that I've been sick to my stomach. The AZ-1 was so very important to my inner fan-boy, who I very, rarely every toss a treat to. Thomas had very generously offered to sell me his back-up strap-on if I lost this auction, a Yamaha KX-5. I really appreciated that. The AZ-1, however, was the real treasure though. It was Thomas's favorite strap-on and the one he was most famous for. In fact, I'd say the image of the Casio AZ-1 and Thomas Dolby pretty much go hand in hand. When you think of a Casio AZ-1 you instantly think of Thomas Dolby, just like if you think of a Yamaha KX-5 you instantly think of Chick Corea, or if you think of a Lync-LN4 you instantly think of Jan Hammer. I just hadda-hadda-hadda win the AZ-1. Of all the gear Thomas auctioned off the AZ-1 seems to have gone for the most over market value. Indeed it will be interesting to see how this final sale price ($620.01 - ouch!) affects the PrePal stats for the AZ-1. Thomas can enjoy a well earned gloat and ego stroke knowing that the final price of the AZ-1 had nothing to do with the worth of the AZ-1 as an instrument. That baby was being fueled by pure Dolby-Mania. It would not suprise me to learn that some of the people I was bidding against wern't even musician but enthusiastic Dolby fans. Thomas, I gotta thank you for all your help and everything. It is an honour to be the new owner of your AZ-1. Believe me, your axe will be lovingly cherished, maintained, and restored and is destined to become a family heirloom. I will sell a kidney before I part with the AZ-1. I also have to thank my wife, very very very much for letting me spend what seems (especially after the funds are converted into Canadian Pesos) to be a rediculously expensive expendature on something she doesn't even understand in the least. Even though she didn't fully understand what an AZ-1 is and why I need another keyboard when I've got a house full of things with black and white keys, she understood that it was very important to me to aquire this piece of music history and she never once gave me a hard word about spending so much money to get it. She is, truly, the best in everything a man could hope for in a mate. Tonight I will love her with the passion of ten men plus two... well... I would but we both have the flu. So tonight there will be very special snuggling on the chesterfield while watching movies and when we get better then will come the night of ten men plus two... we shall send the kid's to my mother's. Now I'm just waiting to hear from Auction Drop how much the shipping is going to ream me (I really wish they'd use someone other than UPS, UPS always reams the Canadian customers on "Customs Brokerage Fees" whenever they receive something from the states) then the paypal payment goes out and then I wait for my keyboard to arrive. I can't wait this baby to come home to pappa. Whew! So... did any other Alloyites win a Dolby item? Thanks! I was so determined to own the keyboard that I put my minimum bid at $100 more than I would ever want to pay for the machine. That way if I was sniped at the last minute it wouldn't have just been "I was outsniped at only $1 more than I was willing to pay" but "I was outsniped at $101 more than I was willing to pay". At least not this Dolby AZ-1. Thomas, seeing how much this one went for on just the Dolby connection you might want to consider digging that toxic black AZ-1 out of its storage locker and putting it up on Ebay.
