The problem is that they were printed on paper that has a high wood pulp content, and so it's acidic and breaking its own fibers down at a steady rate. There are treatments you can have done (the ones I know of involve disassembling the book and floating the pages of each signature individually in a neutralizing bath, then pressing and reassembling the book) but these can be expensive and time consuming. If it's a book you're going to want to read, what my library often does is make a preservation photocopy - essentially a bound, photocopied version of the book - and then place the original brittle book in a safe enclosure & store it under the most ideal conditions possible. It should be laid down flat (not stood on end), on a shelf that isn't against an outside wall or near any heating/cooling vents or plumbing, so that the temperature & moisture levels remain as stable as possible. What is the year of your book? Maybe I can find some history on it in our database, here in the Batcave.. xx ~robin Free Pop-Up Blocker - Get it now ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 20 Nov 2003 17:28:35 +0000 From: Chris Good Subject: Alloy: Target ads Does Tom know if he or Lene are getting any dosh from these ads?
