["Michael & Denise" Subject: Alloy: Airwaves Hi everyone, I have a question for you... I have just rebought TGAOW on CD, and listening back to it there is a middle 8 on Airwaves that I don't remember "Controls enabled / the abandoned something/ the copper cables..." Also, I'm sure the end section (long wave static and piano etc) is way longer than before. I am certain that this wasn't on my old tape version which I must have bought early-mid nineties. Can anyone enlighten me on this one? Was it always in there? Which is the original version, or am I just dreaming the whole thing up??? Either way I am relistening to it again for the first time in ages, and the chorus is sensational - those pads in the background are unbelievably lush - mmmm.... Also great news for me is I got my CD autographed by the man himself!! Fantastic!! Pride of place in my CD rack is now assured (it was anyway of course!) Hope you are all well! (This year, in the Archives?) I even went then to listen to my Airwaves versions (all on CD) but didn't find any 'striking differences' in just listening ... I even went as far as searching for lyrics, and found these two versions: - -0-0-0-0-0-0-0- Airwaves Strange how the scale forms in tiny patterns on my antenna and the Five O'Clock Show, hello hello... Brooklyn is crawling with famous people I turn my vehicle beneath the river, West from South Through the airwaves - people never read the airwaves do we only feed the airwaves or stamp them out of street level? Airwaves - the dampness of the wind the airwaves - the tension of the skin the airwaves I really should have seen through. Electric fences line our new freeway here in the half-light, the motorhomes leave knee-deep in water under a pylon how slow my heartbeat, how thin the air I'm breathing in Control has enabled the abandoned wires again but the copper cables all rust in the acid rain that flood the subway with elements of our corrosian cabled in to me... Be in my broadcast when this is over give me your shoulder, I need a place to wait for morning. No it was nothing - some car backfiring - please don't ask questions I itch all over let me sleep. Hey gang, The other day at a thrift store I found an "Astronauts & Heretics" CD (along with Kate Bush's "The Red Shoes"-2 of my favorites!) and while playing it on the way to work today couldn't help but feel a little down on TMDR's musical career. Having been on Alloy since 1998 and mostly lurking I felt I'd take this opportunity to express some of my opinions on Mr. Dolby. From the first time I heard "Science!" in 1983, I have and will always be a huge fan of his music. What got me to thinking this morning was how much talent this man has and in 21 years we have 4 studio albums and a couple of soundtracks plus some b-sides to show for his efforts. Mind you, I know Thomas' unhappiness with the way record companies and radio stations run things along with his continuous fight against the system as a result, so this is not intended to be a criticism. I feel mostly regret that we have only scratched the surface as to what he can do either by his desire to move on the other things or exhaustion at battling the music industry status quo. I think there has to be other means to explore and continue Dolby's unfortunately dormant music career. An example can be drawn from 1980's British fave Midge Ure from Ultravox. In the years since the band has broken up he has released 5 studio albums on various labels definitely targeting a smaller and more precise audience demographically. If an artist like Thomas chose to return the music game he could almost rest assured that there would be an audience for his music and although it might not make him rich, it could possibly lead to new listeners and bigger and better things. I sincerely hope that the Dolby library is not complete and if by some chance you end up reading this Thomas, know that you have a very patient and enthusiastic group of listeners waiting to hear your next acoustic adventure whenever you're ready to proceed. Thanks to all Alloy members and especially to Robin for keeping us going! Mike ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 8 Nov 2003 00:24:05 -0500 From: "Mary A. Brown" Subject: Alloy: Own a piece of history So I'm listening to NPR on the way home as is my wont, when I hear a story about a company that makes it easier to sell items on eBay. Soon a familiar voice says that he's selling off some old equipment and I almost drive off the road! Look for Auction Drop and Thomas Dolby on eBay and you'll see 5 items (from the brief interview, it sounds as though there will be more). To hear the snippet, point your browser to: www.kqed.org/programs/program-landing-local.jsp?progID=RD8 It's a show called the California Report and look for the story called "Auction Drop Makes It Easy To Sell Off Junk". If he were getting rid the Jupiter 8, I'd be pawning my jewelry!;-) Crackers, one of your wishes has been granted, sort of. You'll still have to keep trying for those photos of Brenda O'Leary! Mind still boggling, Mary ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 7 Nov 2003 22:56:46 -0700 From: "JAMac" Subject: RE: Alloy: TMDR writes an intro for Depeche book Now that's cool! The interesting link to Thomas, is that he wrote the introduction in the book. I have yet to receive the book or go to the local book store to see it, but I just thought I'd let everyone know. http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0711993971/ref%3Dpd%5Fecs%5Fb%5Fd%5 Fh%5F%5Fa/202-7587778-3515837 - -Russell http://www.tmdrfan.com/ ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V8 #180 ***************************
