["Ian Gifford" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 09 Oct 2003 01:59:44 -0400 From: "Ian Gifford" Subject: Alloy: No matter where you go.... ...You just might meet another Dolby fan! I have a regular gig as an audio engineer at a concert bar these days here in London Ontario, I have done this for about 4 months now. Alot of the bands I have been meeting are Punk and Metal bands that all seem to sound alot like someone else. on the odd occasion I get to see some good Rock and even more rare some amazing pro musicians. Another thing about the club is that all music that gets played I get to choose myself and play it through the main system. On Friday I was working with "The Danny Michel Band" who are quite good and very professional. I knew it would be more of a pop/rock show so I brought in some of my own CD's to play. One of the CD's was "Retrospectacle", So I put on Pulp Culture and went up onstage to do the changeover from the previous band to the Headliner. As we were all setting up our gear, I was singing along with Pulp Culture and before you know it, so was most of the band. I smiled and said "Ah... no matter where you go, you will eventually meet another Dolby fan". The Drummer laughed and said "Do you have One of our Submarines on this disc? That is my all-time favorite Thomas Dolby Tune!" So as soon as P.C. was done, I flew back to my board and changed tracks to "One Of our Submarines". Yet again... most of the band sang along. So towards the end of an amazingly tight set of finely crafted original tunes, Danny and the boys get into a game of "Stump the Band" with the audience and connect their shoutouts into a clever medley filled with a wide variety of songs by Michael Jackson, Madonna, Aerosmith, Queen, Dee-Lite and more. Over the Dee-Lite tune, for a hoot, I leaned into my talkback mic (fed only into the bands monitors) and started singing the "Oh-Yeah/you want it you got it" part from Young MC's "Bust a move". Danny stopped the band and said "who sang that??" then he looks over at me and said "that was you wasn't it?". So I waved to the stage and he laughed and said "Cool... do that again" and rips back into the Bootsy Collins riff from the aforementioned piece. So I put my microphone signal out to the PA with all of the patrons turning to watch me and cheering me on and sang the part again. Later on, as Danny was signing a CD of his that I had brought with me, he said "Man, I thought that was too funny when you sang into the monitors... thanks for that, it was great fun". So I told him "Anything for a fellow Dolby fan" and dropped him a wink.
