Ive never heard of this before - if its true was Thomas then still a member of the band ?? & thus would this be his first TV appearance ?? Also ive finally decided that my favourite Thomas track of all time is 'Submarines' - be it live or remixed - its always great. (though this is only for now - im sure i will change my mind yet again). The address so it goes to all of us is alloy@smoe.org (it was sent to me at owner-alloy-digest@smoe.org in error) Thanks Ben, and welcome to the List - here it is: xx ~r OK, first post on Alloy... . Let's try and make it a good one. However... first a drink... or two... ...OK, Good. Now, as I was saying... I have lots of Thomas Dolby records. I say records because like you, I have vinyl, CD and cassette versions of various things he's appeared on. However... "The Wreck of the Fairchild" on CD eludes me. I have taken modest measures to purchase a disc containing this track to no avail. I have refrained, vigorously I might add, from accepting a digital copy of this track from fellow Alloy-minded folks. However... I am weakening. I think this is one of THE MOST brilliant tracks TMDR has released and as a mere human (this time around) I cannot be expected to hold out indefinitely. So, the question before you and I is this: What am I to do? Wait for an "official release", rip my vinyl or (god forbid) cassette version? Wait an eternity for "107.7 The End" to play it and tape it off the radio!?!?!?! I can only say that "Drastic Times Require Drastic Measures" and that in times like these, every Man, Woman and Child must rise up and do whatever is necessary. (For those of you in Brooklyn, allow me to translate: "Do what you gotta do"). However... my glass is empty and thus I must leave you with the most gruesome task of pondering this question alone. Some fruit are sweet and some are poison. Ben ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Sep 2003 16:20:49 -0500 From: "Andrea Allen" Subject: Re: Alloy: The Wreck of the Fairchild Hey Ben! Fair Use does not prevent you from ripping a copy off vinyl and recording it to CD for your own personal use. I say go for it. Duplicating it for others' use isn't protected by fair use... but if you bought the record, you can record it to another form of media so you can listen to it in the car, at work, etc. I'm going to be doing that very soon with a bunch of vinyl, tapes and reel-to-reel stuff (as soon as I get access to the necessary equipment) so if you need anything, feel free to let me know. It came out just before CD's were first made and never made it to a production CD that I know of. CD's were first introduced in Japan and Europe in the fall of 1982 and later in the US. The original Golden Age of Wireless came out early that year. I guess by the time the album made it to CD, the track had been dropped from the album. Our fellow Alloy member Lazlo compiled a very complete TMDR discography here: http://www.swcp.com/lazlo-bin/discogs Looking at that list, I feel bad - we pretty much let the 20 year anniversary of that album release go unnoticed here at Alloy - shame on us. I don't remember much about the 20th anniversary of the CD being much either. I guess people are more prone to note 25th anniversaries. Remind me in 2007. You might as well make your own CD copy from your LP. It likely will about as good as you could get off the radio if not better. I'm sure the radio station would be playing a copy from vinyl as well. Be thankful you have a vinyl copy - all I ever had it on was (god forbid) cassette that spent too many hours in an un-air-conditioned 1981 Ford Escort in the Louisiana heat. I didn't know I had a rare version of the album on my hands at the time. The tape has developed that annoying squeal that tapes sometimes get when they are old (you younger folks wouldn't know about that). I did manage to make a CD copy of the tape without the squeal, but it is not the best sounding recording.
