["Crackers" Subject: Alloy: Spreading Peanut Butter with a Shonen Knife. I used to get a lot of referals to my webpage from Shonen Knife's webpage which I found very odd at first but then discovered it was the result of a very enthusiastic fan who had written a proxy program that made all referals seem to come from the Shonen Knife webpage. In anycase, having just a wee touch of nipponophile in me I've always been a bit of a Shonen Knife fan. They're just so god damned cute. They're "Hello Kitty getting gang-banged by the Ramones" kind of cute. I took a peak at their page the other day and discovered they have a North America tour starting up soon, and a show in Toronto to boot. Only $10 for tickets so I just have to go (taking my friend Pete, guitarist in BFHA, with me). I guess since they didn't really become a North American success until 1994 most people don't realize they've been around in Japan since 1983 when they were just a Teen Idol group. It occures to me that a collaboration between Shonen Knife and our own beloved Mr. Dolby may produce some very interesting results (or at least the destruction of Tokyo). They're very different, but I think their styles could be blended together in a sort of "you got chocolate in my peanut butter" sort of way. So what would your "odd couple" Dolby mix be? What artist of a contrasting style would you like to see collaborate on a project with Thomas. Speaking of collaborations... Whatever happened to Dr. Fiorella Terenzi? Is she one of those "big in Europe, unknown in the west" kind of celebrities or did she just drop off the radar (or radio telescope) all together? Has she given up on pop to concentrate on science or did her flirtation with pop taint her standing in the field of astronomy? Where'd she go? Nah... then you'd get some sort of Tears For Fears (whom I greatly admire but with nothing really new). Ok, Sinead O'Connor... way too quirky a combo. Bob Dylan... Whu?!? Then, Paul Simon... hmmmmmm......... I think I like the sound of that one. Aerosmith... way better than Foreigner! How 'bout... Peter Murphy, Seal, Keb Mo, Michael Penn, Trent Reznor, Kid Rock, Radiohead, The Verve Pipe, World Party... Or, how about these for unusual, strong mixes... Janis Joplin! Kind of a Yaz, only with better vocals and smoother structures. Leo Kottke! Maybe? (can you say syn-co-pa-ted?) Beastie Boys! Definitely! Massive Attack! Oooooohhhhh! I gotta hear that! One odd couple that already happened was Joni Mitchell. Like a former Alloyite said, he was too cerebral and she was too earthy, even though both have highly intelligent music. It had a lot of cool stuff on the album but there was something too offbeat in the end, where the two worlds were supposed to meet. ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V8 #150 ***************************
