Another 300 in the last two minutes alone. I thought I should remind people to please be sure to send any messages to Alloy via your usual subscription addresses. At this rate I'll never be able to check through the bounces & I worry I might accidentally trash a legitimate message from one of our members from an alternate address. xx ~r ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 22 Aug 2003 09:10:45 -0600 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: (ot) bounce-o-rama Unless Thomas announced a new album, I don't think there would be hundreds of messages on Alloy in one day. The bounces are most likely a result of the Sobig.F virus which spoofs the return email address based on ones it finds on the users computer. Apparently an Alloy member is infected, and since a lot of our "alloy" email addresses are on their computers, those messages are being bounced back to SMOE. per an article here: http://www.msnbc.com/news/955498.asp?vts=82220030745 "HOW IT SPREADS One reason for the volume of e-mails generated is that the e-mail messages by which the virus spreads are forged to appear to come from genuine Internet users. Many anti-virus systems respond by sending an automatic alert back to the Internet user, telling them they are infected. Users whose e-mail addresses have been thus forged can then receive hundreds of these virus alerts, adding to Internet traffic jams. " Back on topic, when will we be chatting away about a new TMDR album I wonder? I recall that Thomas said he said he would be making some "real" music again this year after the TED ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "> While TED is of limited interest to Alloyites (unless you have $4,000 to > drop on a conference registration!) the good news is, this has forced me to > get my equipment and studio back in order, get into > composing/playing/performing mode, and to back off from the tech/mobile > phone industries a bit! Maybe this is why I've had the Ramones' "Beat On The Brat" stuck in my head for two days? Oh yeah - oh yeah - oh oh.. I would LOVE to chat about all that new music Thomas *might* be cooking up. I haven't heard any news one way or the other, though he's very thoughtful about such things & I trust he'd make an announcement to us, like he did for the recent "Submarines" cd.
