Hmmm, I've only been back a couple of days myself and reading the recent posts I'm wondering what this all has to do with TMDR. ... and by the way. I have a 1999 VW Passat station wagon for sale. Please tell all your friends! NOT ;-) In other news: I recently got my hands on a 10" acetate of My Brain In Like Sieve which is my first acetate. I've got a load of vinyl test pressings but this is a totally different ballgame, a real beauty. It's REALLY heavy, about 3mm thick and single sided. In the centre is written simply 'Dolby' in chinagraph pencil. It is lovely. Has anyone else managed to get hold of TMDR acetates? They are pretty fragile so I guess many of them get destroyed over the years. I saw one at eil.com years again but it was too expensive for me at the time. I think they wanted #40 for it! My collection is not growing much anymore as I've got virtually everything now but these unique items are great but oh-so difficult to find. I would be really interested to know what other unique TMDR recording items Alloy members have. By unique I mean stuff that was never available for sale. I'm also still on the search for the elusive cigar-box promo. eil.com also apparently had one of those a few years back but I have never even seen a photograph let alone anything else. What have you got??? Cheers, Jon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 4 Jul 2003 10:30:37 +0100 From: "p.latham2" Subject: Re: Alloy: What is this forum for anyway? Hurrah for Jon, Ive been questioning this site more & more - I write asking people about possible Thomas rare items & get no response ( even to say sorry never heard of it - your making it up )but someone mentions dating ventures & we get reply after reply. Anyway Jon, I will have a look at my collection & list some items when I get chance - unfortunatly im on a nice 50 hour week at work this week from 2pm to midnight every day so not much time or energy at moment. Just to add I do have several test pressings, including Europa , & an acetete , large shop posters for I Scare Myself , & AAMB , unfortunately I spent most of my time just collecting recordings involving Thomas rather than rare items like the Box you mentioned but I had heard of it , but also not seen it.I have got some prerelease items with slightly different covers - might try & get them onto an email so people can see them - has anyone got any different sleeves for items - i was impressed by the cover of the US Europa single. PLEASE EVERYONE LETS GET BACK TO THOMAS - THANKS. Paul. It's his own fault. Does an interview. Sparks up hopes that he's up to something and after two months or so, nothing... god. Some people coulda put out an entire back catalogue in that time. Put out a back catalogue, do a movie and still leave time for a self destructive downward spiral into drugs and madness, then do a comeback and end up doing guest spots on cable gameshows. I guess you can't rush the creative process, but you can push it along a little. Political situations have inspired more pro-active artists to do new material and comebacks (mainly shite but well...), Tom has always been a bit more introspective. We probably need to send him icecream or something to inspire creativity... or a kitten. I'll put one in a Jiffy in the morning and post it to his management or whatever. > ... and by the way. I'm sure I saw a photo on a site someplace. Probably linked from either here or the official Flat Earth site. Was kinda pretty and the missing cigar still makes me chuckle. > What have you got??? Cor! If you ever find the link I would be really interested in seeing that. I was really beginning to think that it didn't reall exist. It is my holy grail! I think that as the collectables thing in the FES has never come to anything I might just get around to creating a Dolby museum myself and put images and descriptions of all my stuff up somewhere on the web. It is probably gonna be faster than waiting for FES. I must say that I am also tiring of waiting for new material. There have been a few comments over the last few years about activity but nothing has ever happened. OK, Forty was released but nice as it was, it contained nothing new except a version of Hyperactive that didn't make me want to run away from the noise. Actually that in itsself was miraculous. I HATE hyperactive (Ok slight exageration) but the Forty version was kind of nice. The problem with Thomas is that he doesn't have anything unreleased from the glory days of 82-90. Virtually everything that ever made it to finished state has already been released. At least that is what he told me. The last real Thomas Dolby song released must have been Valley Of The Minds Eye - which I rather like actually. I also listen to Don't Turn Away quite often as it is also of rather late vintage. Still, we need new material! I can still remember very clearly my absolute joy at discovering the guitar-version of Radio Silence. I had owned several copies of it for years and never knew it was there. I never bothered playing them (CD-convert) assuming that they were the standard, later version! I want that feeling again. Now he is living in the UK again I would imagine that a change of scenery and being in his old stomping grounds could possibly turn on the juice again but I guess he is a busy bee with other projects. It's a shame to think that he has become that guy who *used* to make really great music. Whatever. The comment about the interview startled me as I didn't know anything about it. (out of the loop too long) I went and found it and had a listen and agree that again there is a indication of things to come but I for one will not hold my breath. I've heard this too many times before. Thomas can be quite contradictory when it comes to information like that. There are just too many cases of saying one thing to one person and then something completely different to another. My huge and extensive press-clippings collection will bear that out assuming the journo's didn't just make it all up. (which they probably did!) I have started to collect another artist now, Mew, as there is nothing really left for me to go for. (cigar box exempted) This time I'm in relatively early in their career and they release all sorts of different covers and running orders and stuff so it is really interesting to try and keep up and get everything. Before they signed to Sony/Epic they released on another label in Denmark only and those old CD singles are worth a small fortune already. I managed to get hold of a load of them and one that I bought for EUR6 I later sold on ebay for EUR81!!! Ching ching! that will finance a few more purchases. When I was sorting out my TMDR collection recently I found that I have 14 copies of The Flat Earth! They are all different as well! If my wife ever finds that out I'm in trouble! Must get back to work. Indie rock, but a little more ethereal and definitely not jaded. Can you find the album in the US? or would German Music Express have it?
