Shrove Tuesday (4th March in 2003). Where? Olney, Buckinghamshire. What happens? The race starts at 11.55am from the Market Place in Olney and finishes at a point midway down Church Lane. The total distance covered is just over 450 metres and runners must toss their pancakes at the beginning and the end of the race. Participants should be local to Olney and dress as traditional housewives (although they do not have to be married!) and wear a skirt, apron and head scarf. The current winning time is 65 seconds. A little bit of history: Pancake races are held throughout Britain on Shrove Tuesday but the Olney race is considered to be the original, beginning the tradition in 1445. No one is certain why the race started but one theory tells the story of a harassed housewife who, on realising she was late for church, ran all the way there still carrying her frying pan containing a half-cooked pancake! Shrove Tuesday marks the beginning of Lent, a traditional fasting period. The idea of eating pancakes was to use up all the butter and eggs before the fasting period began. I think avoiding the tube in London might be an idea... save yourself much frustration... maybe once for the experience. I once sat in some aged metallers armpit for 30 minutes waiting for the thing to decide to move. Never again, the therapy has been hard. Also be seriously prepared for expense. Ever American I've met in the Uk has noticed how much more expesnive things are. Unless they are from swanky areas of California. Might be an idea to see York before it slips off into the sea. The Jorvik Viking Center is fun. Dangerous if you have kids though, I still have a dent in my head where my brother whacked with with a wooden sword he bought at the gift shop. You also need to buy some Vimto & Deep Fried Mars bars if you are in the north (Usually a scots delicacy but you get them anytwhere you get hairier celtic people, Newfoundland for instance.) > Any advice would be greatly appreciated! If your seeing Midge Ure at Blackpool - make sure you only go to the concert & then leave - I live & work in Blackpool and its grotty & orrible, although supposedly the biggest tourist town in Europe. Whilst in the UK ensure you try a traditional fish & chip shop - and its a must to have gravy on your chips. Well it is for us northerners. Also if your sports fans - then try & take in a football (soccer match) - and you will see the British male at its best - drunk , fat, balding & swearing at every opportunity - well thats me & my mates anyway.- come & see the mighty Blackpool FC, though wrap up warm. Enjoy yourselves. We have that in NY... except for decent fish&chips, not that I've found yet anyway, and of course the Tower. Even some mutation of a Madame Tussauds now exists in Manhattan somewhere. Definitely eat as much fish&chips as you possibly can when in the UK ! also, candy candy candy.. some of the best in the world. And Absinthe (but not Hill's) which is available at the local food market, not banned as it is in the US. Absinthe on the brain.. (I'm getting your bottles ready Keith!) xx ~r Yahoo! Well it is for us northerners. Nowt ot be said for Curry? I was always partial to a curry chip in my youth (last year). There is also the "Super-chip" Which is really just a normal chip that's been eaten once already, scraped up off the pavement and re-heated. - -- PRAEst76 http://www.cancellation.freeserve.co.uk/praest76/ ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 4 Feb 2003 18:34:09 +0000 From: PRAEst76 Subject: Re: Alloy: European Vacation Robin sed: > We have that in NY... except for decent fish&chips, not that I've > found yet anyway, and of course the Tower. I've got better from Europe, and British chocolate is barely chocolate at all. Edinburough Rock is nice, Some of the dairy toffee & Fudge makes me drool to think of it but much of the rest isn't a touch on what you'll get in Europe... especially considering this trip incolves a trip to Belgium. > And Absinthe (but not Hill's) which is available at the local food > market, not banned as it is in the US. I was told the Absinthe we get here is a pale imitation of that available on the continent. Not that I've had any other. Personally I got little out of it. - -- PRAEst76 http://www.cancellation.freeserve.co.uk/praest76/ ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V8 #22 **************************
