I got the Salz Submarines remix CD for Christmas!! Actually, I ordered it quite some time ago, then gave it to my SO to wrap and give back to me (wow, it's exactly what I wanted!). I really really like it, but it being one of my favorite songs, I'll listen to it in nearly any incarnation. The Salz remix is pretty straightforward with some non-intrusive ambient sounds thrown into extra breaks and laid over the normal song. The Hardfloor remix is pretty typical Hardfloor, with a strong bass beat coming in under the song and then mostly following the normal song with various tracks removed or highlighted, and a couple of nice breaks. Paul Sebastien spends most of his time sampling choppy vocal bits and the main synth melody and laying them over his own techno groove. Ricardo Villalobos lays the vocal track over some crappy dub track that sounds like when your CD skips, but he does use a neat effect of stretching out the synth parts in a couple of places. A *very cool* opening to the Threshold Project remix, where there's an ocean wave sound and just the vocals sounding quite isolated; the rest of the mix uses the bass synth part that sounds like you're hearing it underwater somehow with a generic techno snare bit and some of those CD-skip effects thrown in for good measure. It uses the bass synth in a throbby way that gets petty repetetive but would probably qualify as great German club music, as I recall my time in the Berlin clubs. Salz goes too far in their dubmix, which is like turning on your 1984 Casio to "samba" and putting in the vocal chorus every once in a while. They do a break where they put in an interview clip with TMDR about his approach to making music in the studio, followed by a rapid montage of clips fom other songs, including the first 2 notes of hyperactive and the last "whoo-oo-oo" from Dolby's Cube. The Akufen remix uses another spartan background of CD-skipping effects and a beat, but I like that they take the tracks right out of the original, one by one, so you only get 1 or 2 tracks at a time, which is neat. The track from Forty is also included. If you absolutely love this song, then I'd recommend it, but some of the remixes are *really really* German techno, which not everyone likes. Also, I ordered from Formic, where the shipping cost to the US is more than the cost of the CD, which doesn't seem right, and it still takes 12 weeks (and my jewel box was completely destroyed). > I may be out of the loop, but I'm curious what this Hardfloor is. Groups like this use other people's stuff as the basis for their work, but they do more than just re-sample tracks, they add some of their own music, beats, etc. so they're kind of in between just sampling work and just remixing work. > >> Has anyone else bought the CD yet -- I think its great - wondered what > other >> people thought ?? > > I was put off by the presence of a Hardfloor mix. It was a shame about the woman with the violin, Ifor one could have listened to a whole lot more... Can you imagine a storytelling night like the 40 disc live tow atch for us all? We can only hope for that and the new material that may be released I can't wait Thomas (happy new year all) graham - ------ Forwarded Message From: Barbara Cohen Reply-To: alloy@smoe.org Date: Sun, 12 Jan 2003 11:18:24 -1000 To: alloy@smoe.org Subject: Alloy: submarines remixes Yay!
