My video store has me on file as a serial hirer of this I'm sure. Maybe I should just be done with it and buy the DVD. :-) Paul. Still trying to learn to play this one. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 06 Jan 2003 09:34:52 -0700 From: Thomas.Dolby.Robertson@smoe.org Subject: Alloy: Happy New Year/TED Hello Alloys, I hope you had a great Xmas, and here's to Peace in 2003. Some news: I just accepted a post as Musical Director of the TED Conference in Monterey, California in February. If you've never heard of TED (Technology, Entertainment and Design) check out the web site, www.ted.com. It brings together 500 of the best minds of our time from multiple converging fields to discuss new innovations and ideas. As Musical Director I get to liaise with the live perfromers at the conference--this year these include Brian Eno, DJ Spooky, Eddi Reader, Natalie McMaster, Rachelle Garniez and Evelyn Glennie. I also have to compose a musical tableau for each of the 13 sessions. Hopefully this will become an annual gig, though it only takes up a month or so of my time. While TED is of limited interest to Alloyites (unless you have $4,000 to drop on a conference registration!) the good news is, this has forced me to get my equipment and studio back in order, get into composing/playing/performing mode, and to back off from the tech/mobile phone industries a bit! In 2003 I plan to spend a LOT more time making "real" music. I'd be foolish to predict when this will result in anything resembling an Tour or and Album (what a quaint term!) but if all goes well, you should see some new Dolby "product" before the year is out. Thanks as ever to all of you for waiting so patiently! Best, TMDR PS Oh and check out a recent hobby of mine: http://www.retroringtones.co.uk ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Jan 2003 12:34:11 -0800 (PST) From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: Happy New Year/TED What wonderful news!! Thomas, congratulations on your appointment to the conference. It sounds like it'll be fantastic. I'm a longtime fan of Evelyn Glennie (to those who may not know of her, she is a world-reknowned marimba player and percussionist... I heard an interview with her years ago and she is fascinating. She is deaf and feels her instruments resonating through the floor while playing, therefore she must go without shoes during her performances) Best of luck with your Directorship! And.. best of all... I will be sleeping much more soundly knowing you are back in one of your primary elements, creating music. It will all come together, and beautiful things will come of it. Knowing you are working makes me more inspired to work too! (it's that artist energy thing) It's thrilling news.. thanks so much for posting to us. You know all of us at Alloy will be cheering you on! xx ~robin Yahoo! Mail Plus - Powerful. Affordable.
