Hmm, well today was spent gleefully sleeping in (got another week off[1] before it's back to the mousewheel) Spent it catching up on a few industry lists, dipping my toe in the water of IM with my good friends Regina (up from Melb), Kath & Luke (now living at Coolum Beach) [yahoo: forazs, AIM: bailynojustbaily, dotmac:pbaily if anyone wants to drop me a line, Z+10:00], tolerating daytime TV, shopping for, and cooking a Thai chicken curry, and fondly remembering the week or so I'd just spent with Reg & Kath at Coolum Beach. Coolum Beach is about an hour north of here - nice little seaside town with beautiful beach and not touristy unlike Noosa which is just north of it. Tried hunting down pics but I'm guessing a well aimed google search might do if you're curious. Really haven't had a Christmas/NY this nice in years! A couple of pics (all these courtesy Kath): these critters were all over the place. Amazing things (don't have them in Bris.); don't know their proper names but we called them Rhino beetles. This one was easily a good 7-8cm long. Didn't move fast but looked awesome (as you can see) and hissed like buggery if you tried to touch or move them. One or two shared the odd afternoon with us out in the back yard chilling with a drink or three while the Webber cooked (well, we drank, they never said what they wanted), eventually got used to us to the point where they wouldn't hiss if you nudged them. There was a tree next door to K&L's place (where this was taken) where at night you could hear a gaggle of them hissin'n'dissin like there was no tomorrow as they feuded over mates, branches etc. Days were spent sometimes wandering the 100m or so down to the beach for a dip and occasionally screaming up and down the beach on Kath's blokart - a cool little three wheeled buggy with a windsurfer-like sail. They're an absolute ton of fun! Tried it out for the first time while up there. Highly recommend having a go if you ever get the chance. This pic shows it with yours truly saddling up for another go, that's Reg in the background. Yep, just another tough day having to put up with Qld summer weather at the beach in the best of company. :-) Nights were of course punctuated with the odd network game or two of Marathon Infinity. Hey, when there are two PowerBooks, an iBook and an Airport in the house it's just beggin' for it. :-) Hopefully these pics add some warmth to the winter our northern hemisphere Alloyites are going through... I'm sorry I did not respond. I ended up taking off three weeks from work due to a car accident, the holidays from hell, and the flu immediately afterwards. I was on Vicodin and muscle relaxers for half of the holiday season and Tylenol PM for the other half. Needless to say, I havent' been up to answering email ... :) I do hope everyone had a good Christmas, or Hanukkah or Yule or just a very happy New Year. Despite all the misfortune, I did realize that I have a lot of very understanding co-workers, good friends and a wonderful family, people who don't care that my drugged self bursts into tears upon finding no clean towels in the linen cabinet, people who have encouraged me that putting off our server upgrade for another six months is actually a good thing. So for that I am thankful. I'm fairly new to the list, but it would be cool to see the kind of community Bill was talking about (re?)develop. Really sorry to hear about the accident Andrea! Are you okay?? > I'm fairly new to the list, but it would be cool to see the kind of > community Bill was talking about (re?)develop. 'would indeed! Alloy tends to wax & wane in traffic as people get distracted (well I do anyway) and go lurking for a while - especially seems to happen around this time of the year. That said (cue ILYGB) I still think there is a spirit here that won't be broken (someone had to say it :-) so hopefully people will pipe up again soon. Paul. I think so... nothing was broken, at least on me :> I was driving up the access road and was yielding right of way to a guy coming off the freewa. The woman in an SUV driving to a stockbroker's meeting who was driving behind me didn't see me slow down, and plowed into the back of my car. I sprained my wrists, and had lots of back and neck pain for a few weeks, but I seem to be ok now. Except that I'm still sore and my muscles are tight because of the coughing from this WHATEVER I have come down with. I have never been so happy to have an early morning doctor's appointment. > > >I'm fairly new to the list, but it would be cool to see the kind of > >community Bill was talking about (re?)develop. > > 'would indeed! I do hope it comes back... we've had some spirited talk in the short time I've been around. Lots of intelligent people, lots of emotional people. Always fun for a mailing list! > > This message powered by Comptine d'un autre ete: l'apres-midi/Yann > Tiersen off Bande Originale Amlie Poulain. Accents etc removed to > avoid munging. Eh bien, ca marche... Amelie was enchanting, music, movie, everything... happy memories. Andrea.
