Many of you know of my love of ancient gear, particularily old videogame systems and ancient computers. My Atari ST is still the MIDI backbone of my studio (for oh-so-many reason) and I even still use my old Commodore 64 computers every now and then. A few years ago some enterprising young lads manufacutered a synthesizer using the old Commodore 64's sound chip (known as the SID) which was a truly revolutionary sound chip back in it's day capable of sounds unimaginable on many synths of the day. Needless to say part of me is really lusting after this Sidstation synth (which was breifly out of production as they exhausted their supply of old SID chips). Well I went to visit the Sidstation webpage today and checked out some of the audio samples. http://www.sidstation.com/sidsound.php Check out the two samples from a fellow named Bastian. Do they sound eeriely familiar or what? No doubt a certain musician we all know and love is a big source of inspiration for this guy (I'd check out his webpage but I don't read whatever language it is written in). After listening to those samples it really piqued my interest in aquiring a Sidstation. Of course I won't. I still can't see myself paying $580us for one since I've got a number of perfectly usable C64s here with MIDI interfaces and MIDI synth software. Still, the temptation is rising and were I a wealthy man I'd probably grab a couple. The "Machine Drum" synth sounds pretty nifty too. Oh to win the lottery.
