Well, that's the slang, but lonkero means tentacle too,..(had to look that one up)..trust me to know the booze term and not the real meaning. (Another useless piece of information brought to you by,....) Lissu :-) P.S. This is my first day of unemployment, the same as very many of my friends working in and around Sophia Antipolis (or 'Telecom valley') here in France. The economic crisis has us hit hard - local branches here of Lucent, Nortel, Cisco, Amadeus, Andersen, Hewlett-Packard etc. are all shedding people (including my other half) faster than lighting even though they say the worst of it is over,...hope things are getting better where you guys are. So I'll raise my cuppa tea in your direction, and wish for better things,..... _________________________________________________________________ Chat with friends online, try MSN Messenger: http://messenger.msn.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 05:15:42 -0500 From: "Gene Savage" Subject: Alloy: RE: The Expanded Age Of Wireless Brian, While I am not a big fan of the extended mix I have heard of SBMWS (I've seen it called a "hot mix"), the album version is the one I heard on the radio growing up and it was the one I heard when I bought the vinyl copy.. for these excellent logical reasons I'm sure you can now see the U.S. mix is clearly superior. ;^> Funny what you say about the Flying North remix... while it is a "must have," I found on a pre-burn I did today and played while driving around that it really doesn't take the place of the original. It just takes too long to get to the punchline of the first verse... ironically, I think this is a similar statement to what you told me about "Science"... Oops!!! :-) My problem with the Europa mix (besides the fact that they came no where near exploiting the remix potential of that song!) is that the editing at times feels down right sloppy. I know they were working with analogue tape, but geez, couldn't they have gone back TODAY and fixed some of the obvious rough cuts before sending it to CD? Maybe I just got a bad copy... I mean you wouldn't fall down dancing to it but it's like "whups, there's another edit." Windpower suffers from the same length intro that Flying North does... and is just as much of a must have. These will likely get stuck on the end of the CD. Anybody notice the eq is set for slightly more bass on the remixes than the album? I lost my extended version of "Subs" today so I was "stuck" with the album version... still a mighty powerful song! Did the original Wireless have the synth version of Radio Silence?!? I'm so disappointed if that's true... I hope for both versions on that boxed set you mentioned. :-) I forgot to mention Therapy / Growth, which I have no idea what to do with, and your mentioning of Jungle Line / Urban Tribal is appropriate... although I have yet to find ANY copy of that song. I've never heard it... but I'd like to. PRAEst76, I knew almost immediately after sending that email that "Requiem" was the wrong word to use. Requiem is considered by many to be Mozart's finest work, and that's what I meant about Aliens. Perhaps it would have been better to say it was Dolby's Stairway To Heaven, or his Dark Side of The Moon, or his... Citizen Kane? Maybe his 2001: A Space Odyssey, or his Tale Of Two Cities... oh, never mind! :-| If your version of Airwaves is longer than the edit, it is the long version... it has an extra little thing near the end, and it doesn't fade the repeating chorus... I think run time is about 5:10. Although I grew up with the shortened version, I'm thrilled to have the new longer version available. He perhaps could have made that song too long... but it would have taken some work! It rings in my ears for days after I play it each time. > I would for Wreck... if it wasn't for AG. AG? I feel like I should know these initials... could you elaborate? As far as I know, EMI does indeed own the library... and I've herad no indication that they'll do anything beyone release what is already out there, as-is. Paulo, I know of three versions of She Blinde Me With Science: the "U.S. Mix" which runs just over 5 minutes I believe, starts with solo synths and builds, and ends with fading drum patterns; what I call the radio edit although there may be another title for it, which sarts out almost immediately with lyrics and ends cold, and the extended mix you mentioned on 12x12... I'm not familiar with the liver version, unless it is on the new live album for sale at his website. All three use almot identical instrumentation, and the "remix" seems to use the U.S. mix tracks as its basis. Interestingly, I have always gotten the impression the vocals were re-sung for the radio edit, though I don't know for sure. I've never seen the yellow cover with Thomas in the center of the stage that you refer to. I have seen the American release of Wireless which has the background of the asylum with the pulp magazine cover of Dolby on it, and just today found two copies of "Blinded By Science," a 5-song ep that appears to inculde the longer version of Submarines and Airwaves... it has Thomas out, perhaps in a marsh? with this huge room-size-computer looking thing near him. On the back cover he is sprinting away. The rock version of Radio Silence is quite a shock (and visa versa) if you've never heard the other. It is the same song, same tempo, same key, TOTALLY different instrumentation and the girl is missing. It is interesting to hear the groups translation of what she is whispering over and over about halfway through the song. I never made sense of it. I heard: "tre-tisse-coma-fe, tre-tisse-coma-fe, tre-tisse-coma-fe." I had no idea what it meant, but sure thought it sounded cool! :-) This version, as far as I know, was available on the original U.S. vinyl release of TGAoW. I've got it on vinyl anyway. Phillip, i love the reports, and I can understand them being caliming even if they are reporting a hurricane, of fo r no other reason than we hear calming reports here about tornados. It's something about knowing somebody who is calm knows what is going on and is keeping track of it. Somehow that makes it ok... I listened on the website, and it is wonderful. I'm glad he included it, it fits the title beautifully. Trevor: New Toy was Lene Lovich's recording... so I wouldn't expect it to be on there. Any recording by Dolby would have to be post Flat Earth, wouldn't it? Thanks for everybody's input, I think it is kinda cool to bring this 20 yr old album back to life, if only in brief conversation, Gene ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 04:47:35 -0700 (PDT) From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Re: Alloy: She Blinded Me With Science US MIX I think you're right about that, Chris - as I recall it's Thomas as the old man. xx ~R Chris Good wrote: Am I right in thinking the guy in the wheelchair was Tom? I am so used to listen to this specific running order, that I felt bad about the CD release. I bought the US, UK & Japanese TGAOW CDs to try to find out which one had the original running order. None did. One thing I liked in that running order is that when side 2 began playing, the end of FAIRCHILD was MIXED onto AIRWAVES, as you may know. The brazilian pressing of this record is fantastic which is an exception here. The brazilian vinyl were always awful, full of giliches, pops, cracks, noises, surface humble, etc.... It was released by HARVEST here and they gave a special attention to Thomas first album. Flying North Commercial Breakup Weightless Europa and the Pirate Twins Windpower The Wreck of the Fairchild Airwaves Radio Silence (techno-pop version) Cloudburst At Shingle Street I think this was the way Thomas thought the album should be and sound. So it should be left that way without any inclusions except for SBMWS and SUBMARINES (but not the extended versions), AND WITHOUT TAKING OUT ANY OF THE ORIGINAL SONGS. All remixes and 12" extended versions should be on another album separately. And another CD for all pre-wireless material such as TERAPHY GROWTH / URGES / LEIPZIG / JUNGLE LINE / URBAN TRIBAL / NEW TOY / AIRWAVES DEMO / RADIO SILENCE ROCK / ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 13:38:09 +0100 From: "Sally Allan" Subject: Re: Alloy: EUROPA AND THE PIRATE BOX > Can you imagine a TREASURE BOX of rarities like this ?? > Just think of it : a 5 CD BOX: Well I'd buy it like a shot :-) Especially Live Wireless. I also had a great day yesterday when having a look through cardbox boxes of vinyl o/s a shop in Cleveleys ( Lancashire , England) I discovered 2 Get Fit LP's - with instrumental cover versions of both Europa & Urges get ready :- Europa -- sit on the floor with your legs wide apart & straight.Lift both arms up above your head and take both hands over to your right foot & stretch along your right leg. Then return to the starting position.Do exactly the same on the left side. etc. Urges - this follows a routine which it states will - put a spring in your step and make you feel alive & full of bounce. It will melt away the tension in your body by doing 16 heel-beats followed by 8 step-and-claps & followed by 16 spring -'n'-kicks. Well now im happy as I can both listen to Thomas & also get fit at the same time though just reading the inlay details were enough to make me feel giddy .I had already heard these items which are just for fun - and know fan need panic about missing out on anything - but at 50p each i just couldnt resist though the shopkeeper did give me a funny look. Also any cd release of early Thomas must include Pedestrian Walkway, I love that tune by the Fallout Club.Note I did contact Thomas recently for info. in regards Trevor Herion & sadly it appears he died back in the mid 1980's so the Fallout Club & his solo recordings that I have seem even more important now, I felt he was a great singer. Cheers Paul.(in a very very warm Blackpool well for the UK anyway). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 13 Sep 2002 12:58:00 EDT From: Gryphon987@aol.com Subject: Alloy: Speech about Thomas I am supposed to give a speech about a musician i admire for my intro to speech class.
