Jeff, good sir, thanks again for your generosity in helping us all stay in touch! Of course our fair listmaiden Robin has no small part in keeping things singing too! To help things along we could always, y'know, actually talk about stuff. :-) I'll start shall I? Hey I know I talk too much, it's one of the many, many issues I'm working on okay? :-) Bear with me... Actually four: Ted E. who's been with me since early childhood, Chockie (junkfood addict; makes me call out for pizza way too often, frequently complains the fridge has only 'icky healthy crap, and WTF is this about getting a juicer!?'), Rocky (TV addict, often found on the couch hogging the remote), and the latest adoptee Roadie (gift/refugee from recently helping a close friend move house, hence the name), but I digress... Hmm... soooo how 'bout them cubs? Seriously though, I was wandering through some email archives (born hoarder) and found an old drafts folder from late 2001 that had a few messages I'd meant to finish. More to follow... promise it's not too nauseatingly indulgent! Hope you're all well, and glad to see you post again Philip! cheers, Paul. (It's been a seriously crap day at work, forgive me.) [originally posted on (Tue Oct 9, 2001 8:57:20 pm Australia/Brisbane) - - forgive the repost!] Hi y'all, Hope you're doing well. Actually that's the crux of this message. Given the latest world developments I'm guessing that like me, you've found your tension, nervousness, and preoccupation levels wound up a few more points. Before I explain myself, if I may I'd like to go over a nice bit of history involving one of Alloy's earliest (and hopefully still present) members: Clif Brigden. (I know, you're probably rolling your eyes thinking 'oh great, Paul's doing his doddery slef-indulgent old professor insessant rambling' thing again. Please stay with it, I do actually have something meaningful to say here this time. :-) Does the name ring at least a faint bell? It should. Clif has been an occasional collaborator of Thomas' at various times. Take a look at the credits for TGTTME for starters. He also was the author of the original FES site circa beginning of Alloy. Probably like a few of you I've also been fortunate enough to have the occasional email conversation with the man in past years. Very approachable and down to earth fellow. As a few of us say in Oz, if he were any more laid back he'd be lying down. Clif had - and I'm sure still has - a beautifully well adjusted outlook on life that shines. Much like taking time out from the hectic mousewheel of daily life and truly looking out at a sunset for the first time in a long while. One particularly striking example was that he used to have this page called "12:04 moments"* [*- Try as I might, I can't find the page nor verify the actual time. Go with me on this anyway willya?] The story behind it was that one day he'd parked somewhere in LA prior to an appointment and had set his watch alarm to go off a couple of minutes before the parking meter ran out so he could get there and put more change in the meter. He never reset that alarm and it dutifully went off at 12:04 (?) each day. He then fell into the practice of using the alarm as a prompt to take a breath and identify a snapshot of each day. Where he was, what he was thinking, and what he was doing at that time. Anyways, to my point. Today while looking out my office window and listening to the news stories I took a moment to wonder how people I've been fortunate enough to get to know here are, what you'd be doing at that time and whether you were okay. I then thought of Clif's 12:04 moments and had a thought. What's say we (as in Alloy) try this exercise and share these with each other? What I'm thinking is that we each pick a single time, say 12:04pm - or any time you choose, just make it the same time each day - and each take a moment to write a few words about what we were doing/thinking/feeling at that point. It could be just a few words, or a song we were listening to/had running through our mind, or for those with access to a digital camera a single shot of some random thing they were looking at at the time. (Extra credit for URLs of webcams of your room/office/town/city!) Basically providing some kind of snapshot of each of our lives. I think this would help bring us a little closer together when we most need it. Even if people added to it just once, or once daily, I think it'd add a nicely diverse perspective on daily life in our corner of TFE. I have about 96MB web-hosting space to burn so if you've observations or pictures to spare I'd be more than happy to put them up on a page for all to see, alternately Robin's graciously given her support for messages to be posted here (in such case, let me know if you're also okay with me adding them to my pages.) Whadayasay? These are tense times for all of us, but I'm hoping that together we'll get through this. Dare I say it: there is a spirit here that won't be broken. cheers, and please stay safe and stay well, Paul. My first 12:04 moment: 2:18 am Saturday (GMT + 10:00). [13 Oct] 12:18 pm NYC/Wash, 4:18pm UK. For obvious reasons these days my mind almost absently echoes the timezone translations whenever I look at a clock. Usually wake up several times anywhere between this time and 4 or 5 each night. Some nights it's because it's too hot, sometimes it's because of a disturbing dream lurching me back into full consciousness, sometimes it's because the previous evening I've over-done it with Jack Daniels and Coca-cola; the sugar and caffeine winning a prolonged battle over the alcohol. Memo to liver, kidneys & associates: sorry. Incidental sidenote: one of my best friends who lives in Melbourne these days once said he liked Jack Daniels and Jolt because it picked you up and slammed you straight back down again. Twisted guy. Love him. :-) Woke up this time because of a particularly bizzare dream: and as a result I've come to expect, felt exhausted. Can't remember the details now but they never seem to fail to cause me to wake with the thought 'what the!?' or just plain (or anguished) 'why?' I actually suspect that these dreams aren't so much from a deranged mind (though some days I wonder!) but as a known possible side-effect of the nicotine patches I use during the day to try to give up smoking. Yeh. That's an excuse I'll go with. I've actually learnt to get used to waking up at this time each night. I get up, and wander about the apartment (no lights on). Enjoy the Silence. Hmm, could be a song in that. The air is still, the stars are out, the fridge is buzzing now silent. It's at times like this I open up the sliding doors to let in the cool air - the gentle sigh of a city sleeping, sip on a big glass of spring water and have a cigarette while trying to let the mind settle and do a little soul searching - did I mention how well those nicotine patches are working? I live about five minutes away from Brisbane's domestic and intl airports as the crow flies (thankfully perpendicular to the flight paths so I barely hear them.) No such luck tonight; I hear in the distance a helo approaching. Listening a little more to the cadence I know it's the CareFlight helicopter (one of our airbourne ambulance services), no doubt heading back home after airlifting a car accident victum to some hospital. They sound a little like a helo which our Army still use (Bell 500 series I think, just guessing) but either way it's a sound I'm at once gratified and dismayed to hear. I finish the cig, and finish cross-examining nay crucifying myself over how I could have been more thoughtful in my actions, thoughts, or words the previous day or week (yeroner, prosecution is badgering the witness!), then wander back to bed. Maybe the reason I wake up so often is that I love the feeling of falling asleep... At the risk of mangling a cliche, there are many 12:04 moments out there, this has been one of them. You can do better, I know it. P. Nope, unless I'm seriously out of the loop this is not true. Thomas travels by ribbon, not car. ;-) P. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 4 Sep 2002 22:19:12 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Alloy: [OT] Well, given it's open mic night... [another relic from Paul's dusty email archive, last saved Aug 3, 2001] Maybe people won't mind me doing a couple of embarrassingly late catchup notes over the weekend. For starters, an off topic er- topic... Anyone remember Eve? I'm not talking about the girl who was lead to believe 'just one bite isn't going to hurt anyone' (hmm, the first version of 'the first hit's free'?), and convinced her Y chromosone impaired match same. :-) I'm talking about the CD-ROM that featured music of Peter Gabriel: a gentleman I'd suggest might be one of the few that are of the same eloquence and class as The Gentleman Himself. I ran across a sealed copy in a bargain bin several years ago and the Goddess of Impulse (she has a /lot/ to answer for!) made me buy it. If you've not had the pleasure, Eve is well worth a look (no snickers from the peanut gallery thanks. ;-) Not sure how you'd really describe Eve: an interactive experience that is simultaneously therapeutic, immersive (though not nearly as much as the awesome Journeyman Project series or the Myst series both of which I'm an addict: had to lend my copy of Exile to a friend for a few weeks so I could get things done!), and at parts annoying: if I have to go over that lawn with a magnifying glass for insects one more time there'll be twubble! :-) The biggest reward of Eve is that at various times you get to play with a gazillion different samples and mixes of three of Peter's best [IMHO] songs. Come Talk to Me, Shaking The Tree, and In Your Eyes. Back in about 1 or 0 B.A. (Before Alloy) [or was it 0 - 1 A.D. (Alloy Domini ;-)] I seriously enjoyed spending time, as I'm sure you did, exploring the beautiful original clif brigden/tom kidding version of the FES site. I distinctly remember a gallery of Beatnik(?) scenes that looked a little reminiscent of some Myst scenarios. Also fondly remember those initial www.headspace.com Beatnik tutes that included a really nice sonified version of The Flat Earth which, if you timed it right, was counterpointed nicely by some Green Dinosaur thing. BTW, what ever happened to the mood ring? Never got the chance to seriously try that out. Since last week I immersed myself in the worlds of Eve for a while again (as I do every couple of months) the thought occurred to me: wouldn't it be brilliant if Thomas were to explore this concept! Eve was really quite crude by today's technological standards but as I've said, because of the musical content, it still rates as one of my fave titles/breath of sanity activities. Thomas has already given us this kind of ability with Groovemaker (is that the right name? Lawdy I'm /so/ behind the times!) I think it'd be brilliant if he chose to do something like this. Okay, 'nuff ramblin', work beckons... Paul. This message powered by, funnily enough, In Your Eyes/Peter Gabriel. P.S. Lesson learned: if like me you end up living eating sleeping and breathing with a laptop because of work commitments, try using different desktop decors for work and play modes. If you use Mac OS, Location Manager is particularly helpful here! I know it sounds like a minor thing but even a 'blue desktop for work, green for home' method helps keep one sane.
