[Russell Milliner Subject: Alloy: OT: Neil Finn live = bliss No better antidote to a crappy work week than an evening's brush with musical nirvana. Don't know how many Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House) fans there are here, but damn, that man is so good. If you haven't heard his latest release ("One All" here in the 'States, "One Nil" everywhere else - US release is slightly different), I highly recommend you go out and get yourself a copy immediamente. Neil and his band played brilliantly for two and a half hours, and the man didn't even break a sweat (and he seemed to be having an awesome time, too.) One of my favorite moments was when, after acknowledging his elderly Uncle Rolf and Auntie Meg up in the little balcony by the stage, he tried to ring his father in New Zealand, so he could play him his favorite song over the phone. Turned out Dad was out playing snooker, but Neil and a really great trumpet player still played a fab old Bunny Berrigan (big band) tune for him. It was very neat. Sigh. Of course I now have "night club kennel cough" from 5 hours in a profoundly smoky nightclub, but who cares? I got to hear some of the best music ever live. (C'mon, Thomas - there's a fab club in DC just waiting for you to come play!!!) Smiling despite the haze and humidity, Melissa J. - -- Melissa R. Jordan Hope is a good thing. Maybe the best of things. And no good thing ever dies. Very interesting article about the music industry and people downloading MP3s on the internet. The article is from a musician's perspective. I think Thomas would fine the ideas quite intriguing. http://www.janisian.com/article-internet_debacle.html - -Russell Milliner http://www.tmdrfan.com/ milliner@pobox.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Jul 2002 22:21:21 -0500 From: William Steffey Subject: Re: Alloy: Just stirring up the old MP3 debate... William, I've mentioned this place before on Alloy, but before your arrival on the scene. But it's a good time to mention it again, as their situation is soon to change... A brilliant vinyl store up the street from me called Yesterday and Today Records is closing its brick and mortar location after 20+ years in business in the DC area. (The owner, Skip Groff, is this dumpy middle-aged guy you wouldn't assume was involved in the DC punk movement, but was - he, at various times, employed all the members of Fugazi in his store, I think...) Anyway, Skip has the most amazing collection of Dolby vinyl, including all of the rarities that folks have mentioned out here in recent months (things where TMDR was the producer, etc., stuff from the dark ages) - all lovingly marked as such in his meticulous, but small warehouse of records. I know that Skip has at least one copy of the Airwaves/Wreck of the Fairchild UK 45 in his store right now. If you're interested, let me know. Skip's having a big time "prices slashed" sale as they prepare to close down the shop. I'll drop by tomorrow, by the way, and see what he has in stock and post a list to the group - the store closes in September, but they'll still be in business online. Those of you who want complete Dolby vinyl would be smart to contact Skip. He's got the more obscure items some of the more gung-ho Alloy collector folk are looking for (Fallout Club, Adele Bertei, etc.) Cheers, Melissa J. William Steffey wrote: > Interesting read. I see alot of Dolby 12" stuff around Chicagoland (and in my record collection) but haven't seen Wreck of the Fairchild anywhere. - -W Merujo wrote: >William, > >I've mentioned this place before on Alloy, but before your arrival on the >scene.
