What a dream of mine. Of course with working for Disney almost nine hours a day, then taking care of our adorable 14 month old daughter tends to cut down on any time I have to play my "Sugarplum" (my accordion's name is Sugarplum). As I write I'm listening to Dolby's "I Scare Myself". What a love song!! Anyway, congrats Crackers on being in such a popular recording studio. I'm lucky if I can come up with a song or poem every once in a while amidst my busyier then ever schedule.. Their bassist, Melody, demonstrated some brilliant smoothness and sustain in her playing. Proof that I don't have to break my wrists or sell my soul (or at least my bank account) to satan in order to get a sound I like. Even the most expensive pre-made electric basses I've seen are cheap cheap cheap compared to a halfway decent cello or bass... and the action is so much easier on my stupid wrists. It's going to be electric (my first time doing anything significant with electronics) and I want it to be either five- or six-string. I need to do research to find out what the most stable structure would be to support all that added tension. A bolted-on neck may not be the best option, though it's the least expensive, when buying a kit. Must do research on construction and amplification now. Every girl needs a hobby after all. xxx ~R ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 3 Jun 2002 14:45:40 -0700 From: "Crackers" Subject: Re: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V7 #105 - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robin Thurlow" > I've decided, after seeing Mira playing live last weekend, to make a bass > for myself once and for all. Oooh baby! For some reason seeing a woman playing bass is a big turn-on for me. Must be their slender hands running up and down that long, thick, phallic neck. Or maybe it's the cocked hip stance and the pouty lip pose that does it. Mmmmmm.... bass-tastic! Crackers (Time to kill a kitten from hell!!!) What a love song!! It's a song that plays really well on the accordion too. I've performed it live a few times. > congrats Crackers on being in such a popular recording studio. Thanks! Now I'm in a new social circle of Hamilton session musicians (which has always been divided into two camps, those who have worked at Grant Ave and those who haven't). They taught me the secret handshake and everything, plus I get a sticker for my car that let's me park in handicapped spaces. ^_^ > I'm lucky if I > can come up with a song or poem every once in a while amidst my busyier then > ever schedule.. I've been so busy either recording other people or recording for other people I don't know when I'll find time to do any of my own stuff. But it gives me a good excuse when people ask me why I haven't put together a CD yet. Before I used to just have to admit "because I'm a lazy-assed bastard". A friend of mine had a birthday party lately which was a ceilidh so I brought the 788 and we set up two large diaphram condensors and recorded the room. There were no amazing opuses created that night but there were a few charming songs captured which I then burned onto a CD and gave to my friend for a birthday present. One of the recordings on it was my singing the ol' cajun standard "Jole Blon". Well... me increadably drunkenly attempting to sing "Jole Blon" while completely unable to remember the words. But it came out really interesting with everyone playing along and actually doesn't sound too different from some really old cajun recordings I have which were basically just a bunch of drunks standing around a microphone wailing away. For those who have never been to a ceilidh before you don't know what you're missing. It's the BEST type of party ever. Luckily being a musician and having mostly musician friends in a city like Hamilton means that nearly every party I get invited to turns into a ceilidh. If there is a heaven then it has to be one hell of a non-stop ceilidh. Anyways if you want to listen to my drunken cajun ramblings you can check it out on my MP3 of the Week page (which is actually the MP3 of the Two Weeks page since I only update it every two weeks). http://ghastly.keenspace.com/mp3.html Mind you, Keenspace is down with server troubles at the moment so you may get a 404. Hopefully it will be back up later tonight or tomorrow, but you never know for sure. Once it was down for almost an entire week. That sure as heck didn't do my readership numbers much good I can tell you. Crackers (Aaaaiiiiiii from hell!!!!) It's always nice to hear the lesser known Thomas Dolby songs in a public place. This resturant plays quite an excentric mix of music. I've heard other Thomas Dolby songs there before - I think Silk Pajamys. You can listen to their "music mix" on their web site http://www.chipotle.com . They have damn good burritos also. - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: I'm listening to Dolby's "I Scare Myself". It's a 1 ft. long tube in its own little walnut veneer fixture. I hadn't seen it in so long that I pulled it out and fired it up. Sure enough, its eerie purple glow still worked, and I shined it around the room; I stopped when I noticed how many of the CDs in the CD shelf glowed. I pulled out a few, including all of Thomas' discs, to see how they looked under UV. You'll be fascinated to learn that most of Thomas's CD covers don't look all that interesting under black light. The Flat Earth glowed a little, but the 12x12 Remix disc glowed more brightly. The various compilations entitled "Hyperactive" also exhibited some fluorescence, and the cover of Gothic looked suitably dark and strange...but it was the all-white cover of Forty that shone like a beacon in the night when hit with the ultraviolet rays. You can spot that sucker a mile away in the fog. In every case, pretty much all the brightness came from the stock that the covers were printed on--the inks were not really phosphorescent. Sadly, my Aliens Ate My Buick poster cannot be classified as a black light poster, as it reacted poorly to UV. I'm confident this information will prove invaluable to future music historians.
