Thanks everyone, Keith and Slarv, I was secretly hoping for pet snapshots. I have to photograph the infamous Midge the Fish one of these days.. and I think I have a recent one of Gomez sleeping in his hammock. Keith, Pugsley has gotten so big! I love how wired cats get when their attention is completely focused on something. It looks like he has a good sense of humor. xxx ~R - -----Original Message----- From: owner-alloy@smoe.org [mailto:owner-alloy@smoe.org]On Behalf Of Keith Stansell Here's my pic of the day: http://community.webshots.com/photo/15850533/34871822UAwdPP ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 10:09:45 -0500 From: "Robin Thurlow" Subject: RE: Alloy: pix for today... ...also, Keith, your desk looks almost exactly like my desk! I want to convert some of my records to CD form but I'm not sure where to begin. I figure I'll need a sound card but other than that I don't know what else will be required. Our computer is already equipped with a CD burner so if I can run the phono output into the computer that should do the trick. Can one of our tech wizards provide me with some pointers to get going? It's past time to convert some of my Dolby records to CD! It's past time to convert some of my Dolby >records to CD! you will need: a turntable a turntable pre-amp a soundcard with line level inputs software for recording & editing wave files software for burning audio cds you need a turntable pre-amp because the signal that comes out of a turntable is not a normal line-level signal. it needs special amplification and equalisation before you can record it into your soundcard. if you have some way of listening to your turntable now, then you have a suitable pre-amp. if it's a normal consumer amp, look for something like "tape out", then run the tape out to your soundcard in. anyway once you've got the signal to your soundcard, you need to record it. remember that cd-quality audio (stereo, 16bit, 44.1khz) takes 10MB per minute, so if you are recording a 74 minute cd you'll need at least 740M free on your hard disk. for recording audio i use sound forge from sonic foundry. it is not free, but it's a great audio editor. you can get de-noising packages for it that will remove hum, hiss, clicks and pops from vinyl as well. for free, try cool edit, i hear a lot of people really like it. once you've recorded the audio, it's good to trim off any unwanted silence at the beginning and end of the files. you can program pauses in with the cd burning software if you want gaps between the tracks. to burn cd's, i use Nero Burning ROM. it's very simple to use, does a great job, and comes bundled with a lot of cd burners. adaptec easy cd creator is another popular package. if you want to do special tricks like create a continuous mixed cd where all the tracks run into each other, possibly overlap, but still show up as separate track #s on the cd player, you have to use something else. vegas from sonic foundry is the best at doing this type of thing, but it is pricy. good luck and have fun. - -jsd- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Apr 2002 19:23:27 -0700 From: "Keith Stansell" Subject: Re: Alloy: Tech Help I agree with Jon. However, I think Nero can do some cross fades. Another thing nice about Nero is that if you record the album as one long WAV file (or one per side) you can designate the track split points before recording to CD. Just be sure to set the pause between tracks to zero so it sounds like the original album. Nero is available in a free 30 day trial at http://www.nero.com I think it comes with a simple WAV recording/editing program as well. Good luck. I never had a turntable, so no records. I did record a cassette of all things to CD once because it was never released on CD. Vinyl would have been better, but with a good cassette deck and digital clean-up, it makes for a decent CD that will last longer and is easier to play than the cassette.. The album was Double's Blue album from around 84 or so. - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jon Drukman" To: Sent: Friday, April 05, 2002 7:06 PM Subject: Re: Alloy: Tech Help > > At 05:18 PM 4/5/2002, Michael & Denise Luckey wrote: > > >I knew the best place to turn for computer help would be Alloy so I'm hoping > >someone can assist me with a question.
