Happy Spring (vernal) Equinox! If you don't already know... We in the northern hemisphere can now look forward to the warmer half of the year. That's something to celebrate! We are halfway between the winter and summer solstices, when the Earth tilts 23.5 degrees away or towards the Sun. Today the tilt is at a right-angle to the Sun, and as the Earth spins today the Sun is more-or-less directly over the Equator all day. If the Earth had no tilt, every day would be like today (not necessarily the weather!). Today the Sun is 90 degress around the Earth from you when it's rising or setting. This means the CENTER of the Sun rises 6 hours before your local mid-day, and sets 6 hours afterwards (the day and night are not exactly 12 hours each because sunrise and sunset are timed from the 'top' of the visible Sun appearing etc.). Equal day/night was 2 days ago for us at 49 degrees North. The elevation of the Sun at your mid-day will today be 90 degrees minus your latitude, if that interests you at all :o) At the summer solstice (June) it will be 23.5 degrees higher in the sky, and at the winter solstice 23.5 lower. (the solstice is the day when the tilt faces directly to/from the Sun, and the Sun is more-or-less directly over one of the Tropics all day. This is why the Tropics are 23.5 from the equator, and similarly the arctic/ antarctic circles are 23.5 from the poles - "the tethers we were born in" *grin* ) At the poles, I presume you'd see half the Sun sitting on the horizon, going all the way around you as the day progresses. Cool! Please correct me if I'm wrong, I've only recently given a damn about all this! I had wondered "where exactly is the Sun when it sets in the summer", and did a bit of research from that. So now I know it's two hours (30 degrees) further west and 23.5 deg. above the equator, but as for working out the direction from here... the geometry is horrible! Here endeth the lesson. You may wake up now :o) +AndyJ+ (boring you in the letter H) - -- _______________________________________________ Sign-up for your own FREE Personalized E-mail at Mail.com http://www.mail.com/?sr=signup Win the Ultimate Hawaiian Experience from Travelocity. http://ad.doubleclick.net/clk;4018363;6991039;n?http://svc.travelocity.com/promos/winhawaii/ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Mar 2002 09:30:50 -0800 From: "Crackers" Subject: Re: Alloy: pic for today - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paul Baily" To: "Alloy" Sent: Tuesday, March 19, 2002 9:32 PM Subject: Alloy: pic for today > That radioactive lisence plate is sure freaky! But how does this work on a "flat" earth? Everyone should have the same angle right?
