I got number 53 (I think . . . I knew I should have written it down before coming to work ). Somewhere around there, anyway. However, I ordered both a signed and an unsigned copy partially for that reason. And, of course, I've got my entire CD Library in iTunes (30 gbs in mp3 format--eek!) so I can listen on demand without disturbing, or having to find, any particular disc. Fabulous. Of course, Astronauts and Heretics was fabulous, as was the Gate To the Minds Eye. I hope he gets enough response through this medium of marketing that doing another direct marketed disc makes sense. ;) But I'm sure I'm not the only one who'd love to hear some new material. ;) Best, - -- Kevin S. Yeah, Robyn, does Thomas know there are some people out here who want some new original stuff . . . or, heck, unreleased b-sides, demo cuts, old live stuff . . . anything. I have credit! I've got a card! CD-Baby is bookmarked. I'm ready to order! Perhaps I should send a lot of obsessive fan mail to the people at beatnik.com. ;) Best, - -- Kevin S. Yep,.....copy number 35 came a calling to my French post box yesterday (bloody miracle considering the postal service around here,) and needless to say, I'm a very, very happy girlie :-) It's all there, isn't it,...the sound that we all imagined when Thomas said that he'd like to play a smokey club somewhere someday. It's so great to hear that Thomas' voice hasn't lost any of it's depth or tone (in fact, I think it's better than ever,) and I only wish I could sing so well live (and without any bum notes!) My hat's off to the master once again. It's great to hear new versions of superb old favourites - In fact I think the only improvement could have been a new song or two, (but maybe some day, eh Thomas? :-) I have one question tho',.......is Thomas singing through some kind of a synthesiser? It sounds very much like there's a touch of 'flattening' effect there, tho' I'm not sure. Anyway, my beloved copy is being transferred to my MD this evening (for my ears in the car only), so it may remain intact and finger-print free. (I hope that doesn't constitute ripping or such like). Robin, well done on your's and Dave's work - it's really well done! And as for the thighs - yes they are perfect - (but then again, they were before :-) Lissu ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 16 Jan 2002 11:08:24 -0600 From: TextureWorld Subject: Re: Alloy: Forty At 9:48 PM -0200,1/8/02, Paulo said this: >Some of the songs such as Screen Kiss or My Brain Is >Like A Sieve hasn't change much, while others like One Of Our Submarines and >Hyperactive are very different. But done differently and extremely well. That's one of the things I always liked about Peter Gabriel's live album--almost every song was varied in some way, some significantly, but always in such a "right" way. And what about the groovy digital wind instrument-thingy? That was some great sounding stuff. Why don't we hear more cool things like that in new music? I guess we might if Thomas Dolby keeps putting out new music. :) Best, - -- Kevin S. Number 48 of 1000 arrived yesterday and I wasn't here to pick it up so off I hobbled to the post office today to pick it up. I'm listening to it now as I type and I'm amazed. Fantastic sound Thomas for a live recording, no background noise or anything and everything is mixed very well. I tell you listening to this album right now it really is like having an old dear friend you haven't seen in ages drop by for a visit. It's been too long Thomas, too long. It's very familiar and comfortable but fresh and interesting at the same time. Man that EWI is sweet, he's not playing the original Akai module with it is he? If so I'm really impressed that Akai was able to create such realistic wind and brass back then (that machine must be around 1986/87), or is he playing a modern synth with it? Either way I want one now more than ever. Maybe you could run off a gear list for all of us tech-heads on the list who obsess over gear. And how many people went "Awwwww" when Thomas talked about Kathleen on the introduction of My Brain Is Like A Seive? He is dead right though. Once you find the perfect woman it become very difficult to write anymore "hurting" songs. That's probably why all the songs I write are so goofy, I'm unangstified. Incidently, is anyone else finding their CD player won't play Hyperactive or am I the only one? I can't get a single fricken CD player in my house to play the Hyperactive track? Have I got a defective CD or is Thomas playing some sort of cruel joke on us? Crackers (Let's not wait another 8 years from hell!!!) Well, I'm not going to comment on his thighs . . . but, agreed, a fine job. Excellent cover art and a fabulous album. BTW, if Thomas Dolby wants to do any _more_ albums and would like some cover design, I'd be happy to volunteer my day job (at a design firm) gratis. We're looking out for some exciting design opportunities where we'd do the design free but retain reasonable creative control in order to submit to local design awards, where the boring junk most clients demand don't win awards (but they do pay the bills). I can't speak for some of my musically challenged co-workers, but I'd find an album cover design (or full insert booklet, or limited edition poster . . . is there any reason Thomas Dolby would need a brochure for himself?) . . . anyway, I'd love the chance for our guys to design something elaborate and complicated for TD . . . should he decide to release _more_ new albums, compilations, etc. At the same time, with such an offer, I wouldn't want to deprive anybody of the opportunity to be awoken at 4:30 by TD. ;) All the best, - -- Kevin S. I suspect the song is being sung in a creole which is part of the reason why I have no idea what he's singing at all. Although if it is being sung in a creole then I can just fake my way through. I've been trying to pick out the lyrics to "Hey Hey! (Indians Coming)" and have got all but a couple of lines figure out here and there. Some are definetly being sung in creole so I'll fake those to.
