Forty is a seven-track LP recorded live over two nights of invitation-only concerts celebrating the artists fortieth birthday. The album is now available at www.cdbaby.com/dolby and features Dolbys vocals and keyboards, along with contributions from guest musicians including Electro/Folk diva Caroline Lavelle. Included in the 45-minute set are new renditions of classic Dolby tracks like Screen Kiss, One Of Our Submarines, and Hyperactive. It was a very warm, intimate occasion, recalls the British synthesist. The way the album sounds, I could have called it Dolby Unplugged. though I guess that would really be the sound of silence. The first 1,000 copies of Forty will be individually numbered and autographed by the artist. After such a long time away from the musical limelight, I wanted to make something rare and special, said Dolby. I played some of my favorite songs, and we recorded them right off the mixing board. At first I was just going to do a few dozen CDs to send out as Christmas gifts, but then I thought up the idea of autographing and numbering 1,000 CDs by hand, and making them available to the general public. I doubt I will ever press more copies. Its a bit like a lithograph artist issuing a limited edition print. About Thomas Dolby Thomas began his performing career beneath the streets of Paris, playing his synthesizer-based songs in the Metro subway. The advent of MTV brought him increased exposure: His well-produced and intelligent videos stood out from the pack, and his songs "She Blinded Me With Science" and "Hyperactive" became huge hits. Numerous awards and five Grammy nominations later, Thomas had achieved worldwide recognition as an artist. The audio technology company Mr. Dolby founded in 1996, Beatnik, Inc., is currently enjoying tremendous success in the mobile phone market, www.beatnik.com . Not only are we blessed with a new recording, but it's live AND it's got some of my personal favorites on there. I am DYING to hear the updated version of Screen Kiss, and though I'd love to say I'm disappointed because it's not available in mp3 format on cdbaby.com, I CAN'T, BECAUSE LET'S FACE IT, I'M ORDERING A NEW THOMAS DOLBY CD!!!!!! The tracks that are available for preview are delicious and, for a guy who's had an eight year layoff, TMDR's vocals sound better than could ever be expected. Ok, now that I'm over the initial shock of the whole matter, I'd also like to add..... Thank you, Mr. Robertson. (It's been one of those endless days where something non-postponable seems to have popped up every five minutes.) I particularly loved the part of the notes where it talks about Thomas' fanatical following and endless discussion on the net. ;) One small question - any idea what the difference is between the "Live Limited Edition" at $21.95 and the "Rare Autographed" version at $24.95? Which one are most of y'all buying? I also note this is advance order - any idea when delivery is? In closing, let me echo Dabbit's sentiment - Thank you, Thomas - thank you, thank you, thank you. This is a better Yule present than I could possibly have hoped for.
