Can human voices ever conceivably be used? I think that's the long range idea behind incorporating Beatnik into telephones and personal digital assistants--compact audio, highly customizable sounds and songs, including samples . . . A very happy belated birthday to Mary :) I remember going through my calendar and noting that Mary's birthday was coming up, and then of course I went all short-circuity and failed to keep on top of things.. Can human voices ever conceivably be used? > > xxx > ~R On a not entirely unrelated subject, a couple of friends of mine once made a unique door 'bell.' This was in the pre-digital, pre-cellphone days when CDs weren't even a twinkle in a boffin's eye. The thing was made out of a carboard box, about 6" wide, 4" high and 2" deep. The front of the box was painted like an open mouth, a bit like the one on the face on King Crimson's 'In The Court of the Crimson King' album. The box contained a battery and the remains real door bell mechanism, but with the bell removed and a coil spring attached to the clapper and a cardboard 'tongue' attached to the end of the spring. When someone pressed the bellpush the clapper would oscilate, causing the 'tongue' to vibrate against the front of the box, making a nice 'reaspberry' sound. The first time I saw it in operation was a real coffee down the nostrils experience. I'd seen this box on the mantlepiece in their living room, but had no idea what it was until someone came to the front door and hit the bellpush, whereupon the thing leapt into life. They should have gone into production; they could have been filthy rich by now. Slarv ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #315 ***************************
