Hi all, I'm not sure about you but this week's been quite eventful for me (though of course not in the same league as our US friends: my thoughts are with you every minute. Be safe will you?) our CFO, unfortunately my direct boss, started acting slightly less like his Dilbert equivalent (the similarities with Dilbert's boss are truly chilling!), the fanatical Taliban thugs decided that travelling in a fried up Comby and Vegemite sandwiches[*] were no longer in style (though our Australian Muslim community - friends, mates, and fellow community members - prompty said 'what the!?' and rejected the schmuck OBN's typically bizzare call to arms thankfully), and I had a car accident. Nothing too serious mind you, thankfully the only things hurt were two inanimate and replaceable cars, and the woman who hit me has been really good about it all. The Honda's pride is hurt a little now prancing around with a freshly resculpted rear end for a little while, but no human harm done (that's the important thing) and at least I got to meet a nice person I wouldn't otherwise have met. :-) Anyways, enough irrelevant rambling, onto Dolby content. Those who know me know that I tend to be pretty shy/reclusive in real life these days and on the net for that matter (though time charged internet access mainly explains the latter, I'm still working on an excuse for the former). Anyway, in short, I don't get out much. Well today I did, and I ran across quite an amazing site that I think you'll find interesting. The site is and I don't know how they pulled it off but they have an amazing array of snapshots of various websites over the last five years or so. Naturally the first URL I searched for was www.tdolby.com. Sure enough, I was greeted with the early FES/Thomas Dolby: the Tom Kidding/Dr. Bliss (aka Clif Brigden) edition!! ['whoah Doc! Are you trying to tell me this sucker's *nuclear*!?'] Ah, those were the days! Highly recommend a visit if you've the time. If no-one has any objections I'm going to seek permission from Thomas and the good folk at archive.org to snaffle these pages and host a copy on paulbaily.com so we don't lose this part of Thomas' history (I've 100MB hosting space to burn, might as well put something worthwhile there, I could do with some hits. :-). If only they'd managed to grab the tap room threads! I've also been trying to get in touch with Clif the past couple of months on the offchance he has more extensive archives of the 95/96 days. cheers, Paul. I'm sure we could all pitch in for everyone's airfare to get us all in one place... and have it as a live internet event. I wonder how on earth it's possible to access past websites this way! I feel like a real time traveller now..! And I miss Clif (who hasn't joined us here for a little while now, due to address change.. would love to hear from him again though) so it'll be nice to see that site. I was late in joining Alloy - and the Internet in general - so I never even got to see it when it was initially published. What a treat! Paul, I'm extremely sorry you went though a car accident. I'm glad no one was hurt, and you seem to be taking it with your usual wonderful perspective, but still it'd be a pain to have to deal with. But tell your Honda she's the envy of a fair number of us (wish I had a freshly resculpted rearend! oh the horrors of ageing.. ;) I've been a recluse too lately, so at least we're not alone in our reclusiveness, in a manner of speaking.. heeheeehee. xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2001 18:29:49 +0000 From: Philip P Woodcock Subject: Re: Alloy: Pet degrees of Thomas I'd be alright as long as we play Flying North or One Of Our Subs as they are the only TD songs i know how to trash on my geetar - -- Philip P Woodcock ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 02 Nov 2001 19:00:39 -0800 From: "David Abbitt" Subject: Alloy: The Jungle Line As I was surfing around the All Music Guide website as a time-waster I found that one of Thomas' collaborators, Joni Mitchell, also wrote a song titled "The Jungle Line" which appears on her "The Hissing of Summer Lawns" album. Are the two songs in any way related or is this merely coincidence? I noted the "Hissing" album was originally released in November '75, which would most likely put it before Thomas wrote his version? Also, on the Live Wireless video, I think "Samson and Delilah" is a fun, good song and was happy it was included. I know it's not one of Thomas' compositions, but rather was written by Kevin Armstrong. Does anyone know if this song appears on a CD anywhere? Years later, Thomas helped produce Joni's "Dog Eat Dog" album...no doubt Thomas' version of TJL factored into them hooking up (I can't recall the details of their meeting; I'm sure Mary will chip in here. :) ) > Also, on the Live Wireless video, I think "Samson and Delilah" is a fun, > good song and was happy it was included. And if you're curious about Dolby recorded versions, there two (or maybe 3) that I know of. There was a studio version of "Jungle Line," released on a Happy Birthday Records 7" under that title. The name of the band on the disc is listed as "Low Noise," but it's clearly a Thomas Dolby release. The B-side is Urban Tribal (plus an instrumental version of Jungle Line). There's also a live recording of "Jungle Line" on the B-Side of the UK release of "She Blinded Me with Science." I think that this is recording is taken from the "Live Wireless" laserdisc, but I'm not certain of that. I think this live version is also on the Blinded 12" single, but I'd have to check to verify that. To my knowledge, Jungle Line never appeared on any Dolby LP's. However, I always thought that the live version was one of the more interesting Dolby recordings; it's quite a "primal" rendition of that song. Oh, and one other point on the title: Apparently there was some confusion about the name of the Joni Mitchell song, as it may have also been referred to as "Woodstock." And that's why you hear Thomas introduce it on the live version by saying something like "...and it NOT called Woodstock!"). - - Craig Cherry > > Also, on the Live Wireless video, I think "Samson and Delilah" is a fun, > > good song and was happy it was included. I think they finally put "Puppet Theater" on one of those compilation CD's a few years back, but I don't remember Samson being on it. - - Craig Cherry ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Nov 2001 22:16:29 -0800 (PST) From: Brian Clayton Subject: Re: Alloy: The Jungle Line > Quite right. Thomas was making a little joke. The line was "This next song was originally written by Joni Mitchell, made famous by me, of course...and it's NOT called 'Woodstock'!"
