Grrrr... I suck at this game. Well I was very good friends with the late Jim Nitchals who used to work at Headspace (now Beatnik). But saddly I've only known Jim through the internet which I assume doesn't count since otherwise I could count myself as 0 degrees of separation from Thomas since I've also shared e-mail correspondance with Thomas. Let's see... possible routes I could follow. Well, I'm a close friend of Ariel Rogers, widow of Canadian folk icon Stan Rogers. She knows many Canadian musicians so if Thomas has ever worked with a Canadian then I might be two degrees from him that way. Hmmm... I used to work with a girl who is close friends with both Larry Gowan and Kim Mitchel. If we can link either of those two up to Thomas then I can tack myself onto that chain. If Copse or Lem can come up with a link to Thomas then I can tack myself to that chain since I met both Tim and Lem when I was in England a couple of years ago. I think my best bet would be going through Ed the Sock. I was a musical guest on an Ed the Sock, Much Music special. Ed has interviewed so many musicians and actors in his years that surely one of them must be 0 degrees of seperation from Thomas. That would put me at 2 degrees. Me > Ed > ? > Thomas. The problem is, I don't really have a good idea what sort of celebrity crowd Thomas runs with. If I knew who he knows then it would be easier to link myself to Thomas. I've still got a few hanging about here in my > studio upstairs and a Falcon right next to my Mac. Woohoo! Another Atari user. I was contemplating analogue synthesizer emulation the other day and thinking about the Atari ST. I've got about a dozen or so STs sitting around here that I could use as midi modules if an analogue synth emulator existed for them. I had seen some sampler emulator software for the ST and some digital drum machine emulator software but never anything for emulating analogue synths. Then I was directed to the Electronic Cow webpage. Check this out! http://dspace.dial.pipex.com/town/terrace/abi91/cownet.shtml The Sound Chip Synth looks like just the deal I want. I've downloaded it but haven't had a chance to check it out yet. Not only is the SCS a pretty neat looking piece of software but the EC-909 software looks pretty cool too. It looks like a TB-303/TR-606 emulator combination. How cool is that? Now the only problem with the ST is it has no filters on the soundchip (Atari really scrimpt on the chip) and from what I understand it only has sawtooth, triangle, and noise waveforms. Plus the ST has a horrible S/N ratio. But here's the cool thing. The S/N ratio is screwed by cheap hardware applied to the sound after the chip. Each oscilator leaves the chip at near line levels and from what I've heard if you pull the audio directly off the chip you get a nice clean audio signal. As for lack of filters... well there are bajillions of VCF schematics on the internet and the same goes for ADSR envelope generators to control them. Some of these circuits can be built pretty freaking cheap. Heck I found a schematic the other day for an ADSR generator that's based on the inexpensive 555 timer. Man, is there anything that chip can't do? So you pull the audio from the ST right off the chip then run it through your own VCF and bingo, you've got your own midi controlled digital/analogue hybrid modular synthesizer system. And even though the SCS software stacks the oscilators for a fatter mono-synth sound, each oscilator has it's own idependent output on the chip. So you pull three oscilator outputs off the chip and then run each to it's own VCF. Fricken cool! Eh? I've always wanted to build my own modular synth but have lacked the time/money/motivation to do it. But if I use the SCS software on the ST then it's taking care of 3 VCOs and their ADSR generators too. Not only that, but it takes care of the problem of building a means to control them. I don't even have to worry about building a CV control system for the oscilators much less a MIDI control system. All that circuitry in the module that would cost me hundred of dollars to build can be found in a modest Atari 1040ST that you find at the local thrift for $10. If the SCS software is everything it appears to be then I think I might seriously look at building a modular synth system with the ST at it's heart. Hell, I'd be crazy not to. Now unfortunately there's the problems of the waveforms on the chip, but that's not a big deal either. There are schematics for Saw>Square wave converters on the internet so that will give me Saw/Triange/Square/Noise waveforms. It'll just be one more module in my modular system which really makes it even more cool. The only real problem with this setup is I have to come up with a way to gate the VCF. I was thinking that building a relay ciruit that would gate the VCF off the DCO would be a good idea, but then I realized that since there is no place to tap the DCO before it's fed into the DCA I'm totally fudged if the ADSR envelope is set to a slow attack. I'll need to trace somewhere on the ST motherboard to pull the actual midi note on/off bit from and then build a digitally controlled gate circuit from that instead of using an analogue gate off the oscilator output. Even that shouldn't be too much work. I can even set up an LFO module and use it to gate the VCF independent of the oscilator triggers for a special effect kinda like the LFO modulation effect on my Moog MG-1. Another module to make the synth cooler. Anyways, I'm currently pretty excited about the idea of building a modular mono-synth out of an Atari ST. That EC-909 program has even piqued my interest, more so for the TR-606 emulation than the TB-303. I've always thought the TB-303 was highly over rated. It's very enemic as a bass synth with it's single oscilator and its sequencer is horribly user unfriendly. The only thing it has going for it is it's bizarre "glide" feature and it's knock-off Moog filter. What pisses me off though is many years ago when I lived in Toronto I walked into a pawn shop that had dozens of them in a dusty heap for $50 each. This was back around 1988/89 when nobody would give the TB-303 a second glance. Everyone who saw them laughed at the pawnshop owner for thinking he'd ever get $5 for those pieces of crap much less $50. Who knew!? I should go give this synth emulator software a spin now and see if it's as cool as I think it will be. Crackers (Hyperactive with a soldering iron from hell!!!!!) Ghastly's Ghastly Comic - http://ghastly.keenspace.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 31 Oct 2001 01:07:02 -0500 From: "Chris & Beena Cracknell" Subject: Re: Alloy: Seven degrees of Thomas I so increadably suck at this game!!! Okay here's what I've got. I've exhausted my circle of musicians trying to interface them with Thomas's circle of musicians and have come up with nothing. But then I went in another direction. Like many musicians I too have married a (former) actress/model. So working from my wife I can link myself to Thomas in 7. My wife Beena acted in a couple of episodes of an old CBC comedy/drama/crime show called "Seeing Things" (a really bizarre, but very good TV series). The star of "Seeing Things" was an actor named Louis DelGrande. He played a newspaper crime reporter who had psychic visions. The visions would come uncontrolled in bits and pieces as he worked on reporting certain crimes and in the end he'd end up solving the crimes he was reporting on. Louis DelGrande was in a David Cronenberg movie called "Scanners". His head exploded. Now, from David Cronenberg I thought I'd get to Thomas really quickly because he made a movie called "Videodrome" which starred Deborah Harry. Unfortunately if there's any link between Deborah Harry and Thomas Dolby I haven't been able to find it yet. So I looked in other directions. David Cronenberg directed a movie called "The Fly" that starred Jeff Goldblum. Jeff Goldblum starred in a movie called "Cats And Dogs" which featured the voice of Charlton Heston. Charlton Heston played Jason Colby on Dynasty. Kathleen Beller starred on Dynasty and is married to Thomas Dolby. So let's see... how did I do? Me > Beena (1) Beena > Louis DelGrande (2) Louis DelGrande > David Cronenberg (3) David Cronenberg > Jeff Goldblum (4) Jeff Goldblum > Charlton Heston (5) Charlton Heston > Kathleen Beller (6) Kathleen Beller > Thomas Dolby (7) I *just* squeaked by. Maybe someone here can optimize that list for me a bit. I'd have never been able to put this trail together without the internet and I learned some intereting things. There are more pictures of my wife on the internet than there are pictures of Louis DelGrande on the internet. Infact, the only picture I have seen of Louis DelGrande on the internet is an animated GIF of his head exploding. I also went to college with a guy who worked on the movie Scanners and he told me how they blew up Louis DelGrande's head. *(it was a head made out of jello)* So... if someone can link Thomas to Debbie Harry then I've got an even closer degree of seperation from Thomas.
