I've finally unpacked some of my stuff from moving, and in my pile of T-shirts was my Alloy T from a few years ago, which I had rarely worn for some reason, probably in the interest of not wearing it out (I know, counter-rational, but anyway), so I was pretty psyched to pull it out and wear it on Saturday. As some of you recall, the front says "Mr. Dolby rejects science and things scientific." The first place I went, the supermarket, the checkout woman says, "Is that Thomas Dolby? She Blinded Me With Science, right?" So I smiled and said yes, and she said. "I used to love him! What is he doing now?" How interesting! So I told her about Beatnik a little. Later that night, out with friends, I got a few comments as well. How fun! :) On another completely different note, I am being haunted by the music of Phil Collins. I swear, I heard a song by him every day of my trip out here, and since I've been here, he's on the radio in the supermarket, in the bar, before a movie....is there some kind of Phil Collins resurgence going on that I'm only vaguely aware of? It seems it would be Against All Odds that you'd hear so much of Phil. Perhaps there's just something In The Air Tonight. Maybe you're wishing at this point that you got No Reply At All to this. I'm figuring I Missed Again with my humor. Oh well, I Don't Care Anymore. This page talks about the production, and...if you scroll down just past halfway you will see a picture of Thomas as "The Teacher" and a little lower Tim Curry as "The Prosecutor". http://www.rogerwaters.org/about_berlin.html Also, a strange T. Cheers Russell, I knew there'd be at least one! It's quite a cult, I believe. I'd never really been able to face all that bizarre weirdness, it's too odd for my sensibilities. But this time I gave it a chance, and finally got the point. Now I know there's ALIENS involved, it's a lot easier to stomach! I mean, you can explain anything with aliens. Even the disappearance of Buicks, LOL So, next time I'll probably enjoy it even more... ... while looking forward to Janet in her sussies, hair wet from the pool... Right then.. More fodder for my timeline page! Talking of which, I can't believe I had to be reminded by my friend the Depeche Mode fan, : 1961 "at the tender age of three"... ! D'oh! "What are you proud of?" "That I never sold out. I've managed to make a reasonable living and made a small number of people very happy." That just about sums it up for me - I tend to ignore "celebrities" and all that self-obsessed fame stuff, it sickens me. But Thomas is above all that, still very human with humility. Bravo! "What do you see yourself doing in 10 years?" "Playing in some smokey little club somewhere" From early 97... who-hooo - just 5 years to wait! Yes, that didn't escape me, either. And, it left me wondering if that was something he seriously considers a possibility now, since he's five years on and now caring for a baby named Beatnick. I enjoyed reading the interview because it focused more on Thomas' music and less on his contributions to the web. What I'd really like to see is how he would answer many of those questions today. - -Dabb _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com/intl.asp ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 29 Oct 2001 08:52:43 -0800 From: Jon Drukman Subject: Re: Alloy: MP3 encoding queries. I've kept mine in a drawer, and one day when the Antiques Roadshow comes to Manchester I'll take it to the textile expert for a valuation. I'll never sell it, of course, but I could charge people to have a look at it. > > On another completely different note, I am being haunted by the music of Phil > Collins. Lyn and I were in IKEA in Warrington a few days ago. We'd gone through the main check-out and Lyn and her sister had gone for a mooch around the Swedish food shop and I stood guarding the trolley. I became aware of a familiar tune in the background and realised I was standing under one of the piped music speakers only to find they were playing 'I Scare Myself.' I resisted the temptation to join in with my own alternate lyrics (Q.V.) but it was a little high spot in an otherwise average day. There IS hope for the world after all. Earlier this year I bought myself a Sony cd player which holds 400 cds. You can play tracks by just one artist in order or randomly, eg all tracks by Thomas in order or all tracks by Thomas in random order (if you get Europa thrice in a row you can skip to the next track with the press of a button). Or you can have every track on every cd played in random order like your own personal DJ. Or you can go from cd1 to cd400 ;-) It's so much nicer than running between my desk and my cd towers in the middle of an online multiplayer game (Diablo II). I highly recommend it! Just a thought.... I've just realised I have only 1 degree of separation from Thomas because I met Tim Curry when I was 17. As it happened, I had no idea who he was and we had a pleasant little chat while my friend (who did know who he was) stood behind me gibbering slightly. So - is there anyone else who has never met Thomas but is only 1 degree away? Stake your claims! Especially if they are funny, like "I watched porn with Lene Lovich" or whatever.
