[Damien Sweeney Subject: Alloy: RE: The Beauty Of A Dream... Hi all, It seems that I have finally joined a subset of those on Alloy and I would be remiss not to share it with you: You see, Mr. Dolby has finally visited me in a dream. I know this is common place for Robin and a few others here on the list but it's new to me and I thought I'd share. It seems that our esteemed leader was speaking at a university of sorts in some library or book store or something. No Brenda O'Leary, this Thomas - This Thomas was mustached and wore glasses and looked quite scholarly - really quite "British". He was speaking that day on a number of topics and I got the pleasure of speaking with him afterwards at the podium. I told him that I had followed much of his Beatnik interviews and that I was very excited that an accomplished musician was paving the way for advancements in Internet music as opposed to a bunch of non-musician technology geeks. (I mean, who better for this task than our own Thomas - the musician, poet, technologist, and all around perfect renaissance man, right?) So - yeah - I was doing the usual slack-jawed, bug eye fan thing and knew it - but he was really quite patient with me. The conversation then turned to the real topic that he had discussed there that day. You see - it seems that Thomas had developed some sort of a philosophical Grand Theory of Unification about life, the universe and everything (and no - it was not "42") and everyone was excited about it. He asked me "Have I offered a proof?" meaning that he was asking me if I believed that he had offered a proof in the mathematical/geometry sense. I told him that I thought he in fact did, since no one had disproved any of the points of his theory and that I could find no flaws myself. I added that the only imaginable anomaly might be that in some undefined sense his theory might suffer from a paradox in which all pieces are unquestionably and unarguably a perfect fit but that a single piece may yet have some important, hidden characteristic that may yet cause a hole. If there was indeed any flaw to be found (and I believed there was not) then it would have to be something elusive since no one else had found any flaws either. I referred to this age old geometry puzzle to illustrate my abstract point - it can be found here: http://www.saunalahti.fi/~jylppy69/bizare.gif Of course Thomas was well aware of this reference and was very familiar with it (but of course!) - it seems that he too had already had this thought and no sooner had I started my statement than he started nodding and knowingly tapping his speech outline on the podium as if to highlight the third of his four points in the theory that he discussed there that day. He was nodding and tapping his stylus on the third heading - the word "Sympathy" in a very determined and knowing way. (Before you all ask - the answer is "NO!" - my subconscious would not permit me to see points one, two and four of Thomas' Grand Unification Theory of Life, the Universe and Everything - and IT'S DRIVING ME CRAZY!!) Also - his speech outline was beautifully hand written in some sort of legible calligraphy. After that we all sat down to a sort of buffet lunch or something and then I woke up. So. Here I sit. Alone. With only point three out of four to contemplate. I feel like one of the reporters in Citizen Kane trying to figure out what "Rosebud" meant.... Anyhoo - That's my dream. I promise to fill you in on the missing points one, two and four should Thomas make himself available again... Damien Damien J. Damnit... I want a dream about Thomas that doesn't make me feel embarrassed to be seen with the guy. Or at least a dream about Brenda O'Leary and a tub of raspberry jello. "Doris! Doris!" I know this is common place for Robin and a few others here Yay Damien! glad you're joining us in our little TMDR dream group. Your dream sounds decidedly sane and intelligent however... mine are usually somewhat odd and abstract. It's always that I'm going along having a dream about something, and Thomas just walks in out of nowhere in the middle of things. Then he goes away again after a while and the other dream resumes. But my Thomas dreams are fun - we usually have a nice laugh. There was the installation sculpture in Thomas' house dream, the coffee-can dream, the weird objects in Thomas' pockets dream, the tarot dream, and another recent one I can't really remember but i think he was jjust showing me something cool. I always have fun hanging out with Thomas in dreams :) He's very pleasant company! Crackers wrote: > Damnit... Any dream that has jello in it definitely falls within my realm of experience... even though mine is usually lime with suspended fruit chunks (??? what does this say about my personality! ew...) But raspberry counts too. xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 23 Oct 2001 19:26:29 +0100 From: "Sally Allan" Subject: Re: Alloy: RE: The Beauty Of A Dream... > I referred to this age old geometry puzzle to illustrate my abstract point - > it can be found here: > > http://www.saunalahti.fi/~jylppy69/bizare.gif Um...what's the answer? I've never had Thomas Dolby visit me in any dreams, but I did once have Howard Jones show up in one. He was doing a show in Denver and I was driving him around town and into the mountains. I remember feeling like an idiot because I brought along cold cut sandwiches to eat and had forgotten that he is a vegitarian. Strange. Still waiting for that TMDR dream sequence. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ ~~~~~~~~de do de loop, de do de loop~~~ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ - -Keith - ----- Original Message ----- From: "Robin Thurlow" To: Sent: Tuesday, October 23, 2001 12:16 PM Subject: Re: Alloy: RE: The Beauty Of A Dream... > > Damien Sweeney wrote: > > > Hi all, > > > > It seems that I have finally joined a subset of those on Alloy and I would > > be remiss not to share it with you: You see, Mr. Dolby has finally visited > > me in a dream.
