I've just read a great interview with Bjork, who speaks very eloquently about these things that are so hard to put into words... I'm very impressed! It's in the magazine "Interview" (big brightly colored photo of Bjork wearing another swan dress on the cover) and is sold in the US, Canada and the UK. I'd recommend her interview to anyone who might be interested in art from the artist's point of view. Many of the things she says, especially about bravery/cowardice in art, are things I think many artists go through. xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Sep 2001 00:52:26 +1000 From: Paul Baily Subject: Alloy: fragile Hi all, Was just getting ready to wait out tonight's news (I'd seen all the stories at six) for a fix of ST:Voy and the coverage switched to a live ABC (US) feed. I've been watching the horrific events unfolding at the World Trade Centre and the Pentagon including the collapse of Tower 2 and at this time the possible collapse of Tower 1 (correction, has just now collapsed.) Like you I'm stunned. God be with those who were/have been caught up in this, including those on board American Airlines flight 11 and the 767 just reported down in Penn. People who were just looking to get through a normal Tuesday morning. Paul. I overslept today and turned on the news just as the 2nd tower was struck. Before I lost my phone lines here in metro DC, I called all my friends I could downtown, and they are on their way home. I have many friends in Manhattan. I have no idea if they are okay. My hands are shaking. The FAA has just announced that there are several aircraft currently unaccounted for and may be hijacked. God help us all. I'm glad to see you wrote in, Melissa - knowing you're in the DC area, I was worried for your safety. How about the rest of our east coasters? Is everyone okay? Please let us know when you can. Please let us know when you can. I don't know if we have anyone in Manhattan. I sincerely hope not! DC was limited to the Pentagon, and we don't know how many people we lost there. I don't know when they'll let those of us who work in federal agencies go back to work. Anyone who can, please consider giving blood or plasma. Lord knows, the Red Cross is going to need an awful lot. My local donation location is the National Institutes of Health, but it's locked down right now with police cordoning it off (and it's right across the street from Bethesda Naval Medical - the hospital where they bring the Prez in cases of illness/injury - there are camo-geared guys with automatic weapons at the perimeter there.) I'm going to try one of the hospitals up the road. Whoever did this took a long time in calculating the event meticulously. Evil people. She was 10 blocks from the WTC, and she and her colleagues left Manhattan very quickly, just as the island was being locked down. Appreciate the kind thoughts. I'm praying for everyone - the people in the planes, the people in the office buildings, and the firemen, police, and EMTs that may have perished trying to rescue people from the doomed towers. - - Melissa ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 11 Sep 2001 13:34:17 -0700 (PDT) From: Elaine Linstruth Subject: Re: Alloy: fragile > Appreciate the kind thoughts. I'm now at the Press using their cable-connected computers, and of course, seeing the newest photos that'll come out in tomorrow's paper. Almost everyone I know on campus has relatives and friends who live or work in NYC. One guy in my sculpture studio this morning told me two people in his family work in the area of the Trade Towers & he couldn't get in contact with either of them. All around campus there were people frantically trying to arrange rides back down to the metropolitan area so they could try to be with their families. Our own friends are safe, as far as we've been able to learn. We did have one very close call. My mom's neighbor's daughter, who I went to school with, now lives in NYC and works on the twelfth floor of one of the Trade Towers. She was not there today because she feels unwell due to a somewhat difficult pregnancy, and had taken the day off. Her poor father was in tears when my mother went to see him today - very thankful, but also of course horrified for those thousands who were not so lucky. We're all very much shaken by it all. When Dave first told me about it this morning, my first immediate image was that it was nationwide, that other major cities were under attack as well. This was right after the second passenger jet crashed through the remaining Trade Tower & no one really knew exactly what was going on. It's still a mystery & I only hope it can be solved without further bloodshed or loss of life. But I very much doubt that will happen. The thought of this escalating is making me feel very sick. The attacks today encompass two of my greatest fears... air disaster, and threat of nuclear war. I know these are common fears for a lot of people. It's frankly like living in a nightmare right now. It still seems unreal. The local Red Cross is having to stay open past normal hours to accomodate all the people lined up to donate blood and make financial contributions. Thanks to everyone on this list for your kind words toward the victims of these attacks. Everyone... please stay safe. xxxxx Robin T Get email alerts & NEW webcam video instant messaging with Yahoo!
