Hi y'all, A gentleman I've always admired the hell out of, Luke Oliver, just let me know he wrote the following in our latest email catch-up. Luke & I used to work together in Adelaide (South Australia) way back when: hot diggety they were good times! We cross paths only every few months given he lives a couple of states away but it's like yesterday when say we (Luke, his lovely and equally talented wife Kath & I) spend an afternoon getting trashed in a Golden Wing lounge while they're waiting for a connecting flight. My writing is B-grade ('sokay, I've come to accept it :-), his is definitely A grade if you ask me. I didn't know whether to laugh due to his typically brilliant Douglas Adams-esque style, kick myself for laughing at a depiction of a life-threatening situation, or go into shock that he'd had a near-death experience. I ended up doing a little of all. Luke, old chap, definitely glad you're still with us. And thanks for the laugh! (though I'm still feeling guilty about it :-) Paul. Thanks for your note. I think your idea is good.. maybe the contest should be won by who comes up with the best "new" contest?? Oh well.. I guess we could always just say that whoever writes the best note about why they should own this album.. then I can just send it to them. Or I guess if someone wanted to trade something like a cool TMDR poster or a T-shirt or a key chain or something I'd be up for that. And if anyone wants the Lene "New Toy" 12" single for a collection.. let me know. Meanwhile.. does anyone have any idea what this Mini LP might be worth on E-bay? I really don't care.. but it's fun for the sake of curiousity. Ciao for now.. The XMF format, newly approved by the MIDI Manufacturer's Association (MMA) and the Association of Musical Electronics Industry (AMEI) of Japan, offers many of the features and benefits of Beatnik's own proprietary Rich Music Format (RMF), the leading structured audio technology used to enhance music and sound on mobile devices. XMF combines multiple music and sound formats, such as MIDI and Down-Loadable Samples (DLS), into a single file that can be controlled interactively during playback. An XMF file can be up to 100 times smaller than the equivalent MP3 file, with higher quality than most streaming audio formats. This makes XMF ideal for wireless applications including interactive music remixers, mobile phone ring tones, audio content delivery and games. "Downloadable ringing tones have exploded over the last couple of years, and Top 40 music on phones is next," said founder and Chief Beatnik, Thomas Dolby Robertson, Beatnik, Inc. "The timing is perfect for the music and mobile phone industries to jointly define this global audio file format as it makes sense for handheld devices. As the leader in the field, Beatnik is determined to be first to market with a practical XMF software solution." Beatnik is committed to migrate its existing tools, audio engine and player to the newly ratified file format to drive demand for the development of advanced audio enabled applications, services and content in the mobile wireless market. Beatnik expects to roll out the first product to support XMF in Q1 2002. As a member of the MMA, Beatnik helped lead the design of the XMF standard with other industry leaders including Alesis, Cakewalk, E-mu Systems, IBM, Kurzweil, Line 6, LiveUpdate, Nokia, Steinberg, Sun Microsystems and Yamaha.
