Martin was kind enough to give me two slim pamphlet-like volumes of his work but I am thrilled to be able to read more. My favorite is called "Vision Between Waking and Sleeping." He told me that one is about a ballet dancer he had "fallen in love with across the footlights" and whom he had the opportunity to meet long afterwards, once he was happily married. Having a parallel in my own life, this poem really speaks to me. With TMDR's penchant for using the word "dream" or "sleep" in his songs (I think I've counted about 13 times), it is obvious that he and his father share a love for certain imagery. There's also a poem about Thomas' mom, called "For Cecil" and one written for his brother (who appears to be running the site) and sister-in-law called "Epithalamium (Stephen and Judith)." > Incidentally if this should ever go up onto the website along > with the short poems, I hope they're able to include the beautiful > illustrations that were in the first edition, as well as the > cover art. Will you please describe what they look like, Robin? My copies just have the poetry. I think I know a little how you felt when you found those books. While I was at Vanderbilt, the library there had a copy of one of Martin's books on pottery. It was so precious that I couldn't check it out but I spent some very pleasant hours in an isolated corner looking at it. Thanks to both you, Robin, and Thomas, for letting us know about this great treasure! I would be very happy to.... I'll want to have the volume in hand so I'll get back to you about this :) > While I was at Vanderbilt, the library there had a copy of one of > Martin's books on pottery. In our Fine Arts library, we have Professor Robertson's large 2-volume work on pottery as well as the concise version, and one on Athenian vase painting.. these are heavily used by students. I had never looked very much at ancient Greek paintings before seeing these books, but it struck me how much the ancient Greek figures/compositions have in common with those seen in Art Nouveau, which is my favorite style. Very interesting to see the historical connection this movement was reaching back to and elaborating upon. xxxxx Robin ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #229 ***************************
