It takes time, y;know.... sorry, I hadn't caught your old message. I tend to do that, too; getting burnt out on something new, especially cds since I don't dive into my pockets much more to buy new CDs. Happened to me with the Eels, David Bowie's Outside, a Buckethead Cd, several others. Amen on the case ending up in your son's toybox. My son is adamant that his Mac CD-ROM (I think, 'blaster pals reading fun') goes in my Soul Coughing CD case. But that's also one of his favorites, too... Dido, in my opinion, is very plain looking in a British way, yet still beautiful (speaking from experience). I've had no luck so far, myself. Let the gathering begin! I just counted myself lucky to have the blinded by science ep on tape. Sure, you can make it look (sound) a little better with a little sharpening & color correction (eq), but generally, as the rule of thumb goes: crap in, crap out. That's why I tend to get so frustrated when folks give me digital camera pictures at work to incorporate into brochures & stuff. It's like giving Trent Reznor a casio sk-1 sampler. Hey wait, that's might work... But I have seen miracles done with neat but beat recordings, especially with audio enhancers. Just gotta watch that you don't lose the original warmth. I'd rather hear tape hiss than have the cymbals hurt my ears. As far as the appearance? I suppose we could fix the images frame by frame in photoshop, and reassemble them... ~robb ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Aug 2001 17:39:27 -0400 From: Robin Thurlow Subject: Alloy: (music) Radio Caroline reference I thought this was a strange coincidence, having just read Chris' post about Radio Caroline. A music label whose list I subscribe to has sent out notice of special deals just for today... one of them was: http://www.projekt.com/projekt/product.asp?sku=ARC00016 at only $4.95 (shipping and tax brought it to just under $10) for friday the 24th only. It sounded so tempting and the coincidence of it all just grabbed me.. so I got all caught up in the moment and have ordered it! I've never even heard this band before so I'm extremely curious. Don't the titles of the songs on the CD sound like it's related to the radio station? The legendary Radio Caroline strikes again... xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 25 Aug 2001 01:01:49 -0400 From: "Robin Thurlow" Subject: Re: Alloy: (OT) missed the new Invader Zim Thanks for the information, Jon. And tonight's installment... I suppose it was only a matter of time, what with Professor Membrane lurking about, for someone on that show to yell "Science!" (it was Zim himself, in one of tonight's episodes :) Yay! Other cool TV experience tonight.. completely OT now... I happened upon a little documentary about - guess who - none other than Cheddar Man himself, of Cheddar, England (the star city on my geocheese tour as some of you may recall) The archaeologists who were making a show about him did a fascinating thing in order to try to make the subject matter more interesting to non-scientists. They extracted mitochondrial (sp?) DNA from Cheddar Man's tooth, then took cell samples of local people whose families had been in Cheddar for as many generations as they could recall. I don't know if they seriously expected to find a direct descendent of CM's maternal line, but they in fact did, and it happened to be the history teacher at the local school! I never had any idea any of this had been found, but I think it's truly amazing. This teacher is the individual with the world's longest documented link to ones ancestry (I think it was 10,000 years?) And, one more (very slightly on-topic) thing. I've just read of a gentleman called Robertson who actually inspired the great painter Goya with his scientific and technical innovations. Robertson was an optician, a professor of physics and a balloonist who developed the art of the "phantasmagoria" show and large-scale projection installations in Europe. Of course these reminded me of Thomas' early work with projected images... I think I recall Thomas' story in an interview about projecting large images onto the sides of buildings across the street from his flat in London, and performing with them as a backdrop. The Robertson of the early 1800s seemed to have a lot in common with Thomas in terms of creative thought, the more I read about him (in a book I'm repairing) I'm sure there's no relation but I still thought it was interesting! Meandering off to bed now... xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #224 ***************************
