I can't give you any advice about Southern California, having never been there... but it's wonderful to hear you're starting medical school. Are you prepared to be asked for free medical advice by everyone you know, the moment you set foot into the med school? I know *I'm* already making up my list... (heeheehee :) I can change your Alloy account however you'd like it once you relocate. I'm sure you'll be very busy @ school, but we'd still love to hear from you now & then to let us know how you are. Best of luck!!!! xxxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 12:28:04 EDT From: CJMark@aol.com Subject: Re: Alloy: flying south Hey Monya.. Welcome to SoCal! First of all.. it isn't San Fran at all.. You might not like it if you try to compare the two. And you'll be heading into Orange County.. which is largely a bedroom community for Los Angeles.. with all it's family oriented things to go along.. Not that that is a bad thing.. it's just that soccer moms and Chucky Cheese and malls and all that will be more prevalent. That having been said.. you are also not far from a very nice beach area.. Newport Beach.. and nearby Laguna Beach.. and also "Surf City" Huntington Beach. They are nicer and cleaner than LA beaches.. and if you like surfer types.. you'll be in heaven! Since I live in LA.. I don't get as far south as Irvine too often.. so I don't know specifics about things to see and do.. but I'm sure you'll find them once you get there. Then I'll drop by and visit and you can show them to me! Oh.. and by the way.. I have this dull ache.. right here in the small of my back.. see.. right there.. yes.. Ciao for now.. What if "May the Cube be with you" is really a curse?! You know, when I was blocked while writing my thesis, I used to play Tetris. My subconscious kicking in, perhaps? Seriously, Robin, I hope that your house has been cleared of the negative atmosphere. I can't think of anything more discouraging than having the person who should be most supportive of you be your worst critic. You know your friends at Alloy want you and Dave to follow your dreams and we admire you for having the courage to do it! And Melissa, yeah, I want to know your take "Planet of the Apes" too. My friends who have seen it said they were disappointed and yet the SF Chronicle gave it a stellar review. What gives? You think he was just a Mark Wahlberg fan? Did anyone else see Allee Willis last week on, yep, you guessed it, The Screen Savers? I couldn't get the video on the website to work but I enjoyed her on the show. It was fun seeing what she looked like, how her house was set up to accommodate all those folks working for her (the place was filled with Macs, I was surprised to see), and to hear that she has written many songs, like the "Friends" theme, along with her co-authorship of "Don't Turn Away". If you want to read or see more, go the thescreensavers.com and look for last week's show with Lily Tomlin. One last thing, Keith, Eric, and Dennis, the CGT are coming to Boulder in a week or so. We saw them last night (and we're going again tonight) and they were fantastic! You really ought to see them if you can. I'm not ignoring you, Beth. I just figure you've got a lot on your plate right now! I don't know whether it is 'courage' or 'stupidity' but it doesn't matter, we're still compelled to do it :) Last night we went to hear our artist friend give a talk at her show, and she mentioned returning in the wintertime from her 2-year Peace Corps stint in Ecuador and having nowhere to live. So she wrote a little book of thoughts about her trip, bought a 90-day Greyhound bus pass with her senior citizen's discount, and travelled the country with prints of her little book... selling them wherever she decided to stop off, in order to support herself. It got her through the winter with both shelter and an income. Dave and I thought it was completely brilliant. Immediately after the talk, another friend of ours who was there came running up to us & said "I *know* you are thinking of living on the Greyhound bus and selling your artwork, aren't you!" Gosh, are we that predictable? :) I think the people in the local art community are getting to know us too well! We've never expected any support from Dave's dad... the very thought is pure science fiction. Actually not many of our current immediate family are particularly supportive, except for my eldest sister who is wonderful. In the face of this you learn to be supportive and strong for yourself & each other. My greatest teacher in this was my father, who was constantly encouraging me to live life "on the edge" so to speak, take risks, and be independent and strong. He planted in me a really stubborn sense of forward motion & his lifelong confidence in me is an inspiration to this day. Sure, my forward motion may seem erratic, but wherever it is I'm going... I'm getting there (LOL! :) And Dave is getting where he's going too. Becoming a professor and teaching internationally, in addition to being a painter, is a huge goal because of the travel and new experiences & people he'll get to meet. I'm off on a tangent... but once again, thank you.. your supportive words are very appreciated :) xxxxx Robin T ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 20:31:17 -0600 From: "teresa adams" Subject: Alloy: Re: alloy-digest V6 #214 There was a young man named Thomas Who saw the world with great Promise Awesome music he made That will never fade As his fans keep on ever listening Cory Styles M.(Teresa Adams) 'We shall not be side-tracked by the fear of Mortal Man!' www.Dennisa.com/Teresa - Nutrition/Income Opportunities iMMersE your soUL in LOVE - RadioHead ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Aug 2001 23:56:26 -0400 From: "Robin Thurlow" Subject: Re: Alloy: "hacked" off..? and a strange Dolby dream Robyn wrote: > Thanks for the heads-up. Yes, Rachel Pollack says her book can apply to many decks. I've heard of the Robin Wood deck but have never seen it. I was very excited tonight.. Dave brought me a surprise. It's the Vertigo tarot set with Dave McKean's illustrations (he's a wonderful artist who has done the cover art for the Sandman and Dreaming series) The text for the booklet is written by none other than Rachel Pollack, with a forward by Neil Gaiman. I doubt I'll use them to do readings but I really want to look at them, and read Rachel's take on them. > Hm. Sounds like there was something you > needed to be reminded about > regarding that card. But then, I could just be > talking out my hat. ;) I'm far too inexperienced at all of this, and am probably missing some major things that are obvious to someone with more insight. What do you think the meaning might be?? help..!!! In reading further about this particular card (in Rachel's book) I've found out it was featured in a famous poem by WB Yeats called "The Wasteland".. which I now have to read..! xxxx Robin T ------------------------------ End of alloy-digest V6 #215 ***************************
